Karen Roman Seriously? I only ever read one of his books (The Lions of al-Rassan), and found it to be not much more than a mediocre romance novel.

Pass.

Traveller I started Tigana today, but was not too impressed. I did enjoy Under Heaven, though-, so I'd like to give him another go.

If the members vote for Tigana, I guess we'll have to go with the majority vote, but I'd like to try River of Stars which I've been told is better than Under Heaven.

Members, please remember that you can still change your vote if you should happen to change your mind after voting... :P

Romance? It wasn't a romance novel... :)

Traveller Ok, now you guys have me curious enough to read it sometime anyway...:P

I absolutely understand that impulse. I've discovered some wonderful surprises by "reading against type" (although GKK wasn't one of them), and I'm a big fan of checking things out even when friends and critics have warned me away.

I think it's fair to say the genre is frequently in the eye of the beholder. :)

It's possible my extreme aversion to the characteristics of the romance genre makes me more sensitive to their appearance elsewhere.

And, Traveller, I'm a big fan of following curiosity and "reading against type", so I understand this impulse entirely. Have fun! :)

Thanks! GR has already greatly broadened my horizons. :D

Saski I'll vote for any of them that happen to be in the library in English (my Swedish is pretty good but for scifi...naaaa).

So, in English we have:
River of Stars
Under Heaven

I'd say grab River of Stars while you can (it's his newest book), but if you land up with Under Heaven, I'd be happy to discuss that with you in a casual thread, if you like. At least one other person here that I know of read it. Keep in mind it's not Scifi, but set in China.

Saski I am up for either. Going into town next week and will try to pick up both. If no one else knows about them here, I can get them for sometimes up to six months.

Traveller Cool! If the group chooses Tigana, I'm going to have to read that, but I think I'm going to read River of Stars too in the near future, since a friend passed his copy on to me with the recommendation that its good.
(Ok, there I let my secret motivation out of the bag!) :P

message 12: by Traveller (new)

Traveller Hmm, seems like we're going to have to look at two books here...

message 13: by Traveller (new)

Traveller Hi everyone, thanks to those who voted.

Due to library availability, we decided to start with River of Stars first, but we'll do Tigana as well very soon, to be fair, since the vote was a tie.

First River of Stars thread here: http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/1...
