Georgina Ortiz I love Amazon Kindle's e-ink. But as much as I love my Kindle (and the vast number of books I can bring/read at any given time), I love my "real" books more. The actual feel and smell of the pages are things that cannot ever be replaced by technology.

message 52: by Heather (new)

Heather Carter None of these was really right for me. I have a Kindle, but I use it mostly for school. I still prefer good old-fashioned books for reading.

message 53: by Jo (new)

Jo Eden I have a Kindle and an Ipad, I love them both, but I use the Kindle for reading and the IPad for Artwork.

Sandra Emma wrote: "Actually, mine broke. The 1st Edition Nooks only last a year. :( But, I did only use it for the web.
I read books on my phone though!"

That's not true. I had mine for two years and when I traded it in on a Nook tablet it was still going strong. And I read on it every day... sometimes all day.

message 55: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer If a Kindle Touch can be considered a tablet, then yes I read on my tablet! I also read on my desktop, my phone, my laptop, read books in print, listen to audiobooks...

message 56: by Michelle (new)

Michelle I live in a country where English isn't the native language so having a Nook has literally saved me from going insane. I can have hundreds of books on one device.

message 57: by Razmatus (new)

Razmatus holding a book like A dance with dragons or LOTR one volume edition in your own hands and seeing as you go through it and just hold the immensity of them will never be bested by a tablet for me :)

message 58: by Noura (new)

Noura Al-buraiki I have A Galaxy Tab and I like to read on it coz I love reading e-books rather than normal books.

I love the smell of my kindle :)

message 60: by Will (new)

Will Hall I way too old-fashioned. I can't 'get with the times' - I'm a 26 year-old grumpy old man. Still, I like how books smell. Does that sound creepy? Weird? I got a book, Switched by Amanda Hocking, and I hated the smell of. I couldn't read it. Well, I did try the first two chapter's regardless - utter tosh! But the smell was my first clue!

message 61: by Madeleine (last edited Mar 07, 2012 10:43AM) (new)

Madeleine I swore that I'd never use a reading device.... until I got a Kindle two Chistmases ago and was instantly smitten with it. I love that I can download a bunch of public-domain classics or up-and-coming authors' books for free AND am privy to the Kindle-only works that some of my favorite authors are wont to publish. I'm pretty sure that I'll always prefer physical books over their electronic kin, though.

Bummer that this poll doesn't have more of a grey-area option for those of us who love our e-readers but will always love our ink-and-paper books even more.

message 62: by Rachel (new)

Rachel I have a Kindle and it is so convenient but I do really miss handling/smelling a real book.

message 63: by Razmatus (new)

Razmatus I prefer real books, they look much nicer and when put into the shelf after reading... no tablet or kindle in the world could replace that awe when looking at a neat bookshelf full of books read or to read and thinking oh my :)

message 64: by Britt (new)

Britt I prefer books but I'm looking into a reader just for the convenience when reading and traveling with bigger books.

message 65: by Emma (new)

Emma i only get free books so thats makes my bookshelf on my nook limited. i mostly read real books, unless a good book happens to be free

message 66: by Anna (new)

Anna I've got an iPad, but I use it mostly for browsing/email/games etc, not for reading books. I find it much easier to concentrate when reading an analog book. Too bad an ADD to read on an iPad.
- technical books aside, where you can't beat the search function in a PDF or ebook with that of the analog version... but pleasure reading, yes, I prefer second-hand, analog books, which I like to then give to friends after reading.

message 67: by Razmatus (new)

Razmatus Brit wrote: "I prefer books but I'm looking into a reader just for the convenience when reading and traveling with bigger books."

I managed to travel with A dance with dragons, and as far as I know, fiction books rarely get any bigger than that :D

message 68: by Tiffany (new)

Tiffany I used to use a nook until my husband bought me an iPad. Now I use a few different apps on my iPad to read. Either Kobo, IBooks, nook, or the kindle. It actual depends who has the cheaper book sometimes. Kobo is good for social network interacting while reading which is an entirely different aspect than most other apps.

message 69: by Mx. B (new)

Mx. B I will use my iPad for textbooks, because they tend to include pictures and flipping pages/taking notes is better on a tablet. However, I use my Kindle for book reading and prefer it. I also plan to read comics on the tablet, and some RSS feeds. IMO, one device isn't ever going to be able to satisfy all my needs/wants.

message 70: by Magdalena (new)

Magdalena Cassel I received a Kindle Fire as a present a week ago. I haven't yet read a book on it. There are a few reasons for this.

1) I often read eBooks using the Kindle app on my iPhone, which I always have with me.

2) I'm very selective in the books I buy. If I love and treasure the book, I want a hard copy. If I'm not going to love and treasure it, I don't see the point of buying it.

3) I did download a preview of Game of Thrones and read it on my Kindle Fire. But when I finished the preview, one of my friends lent me his physical copy of the book. That's one thing that keeps me loyal to physical books -- often, reading is a) social and b) free. (When I finish the series, if I might want to reread it but didn't adore it, I'll consider buying Kindle copies.)

There are a lot of pros to Kindle reading which may win me over slowly.

1) I can read in bed without keeping my boyfriend awake.

2) It's a lot easier to hold the Kindle with one hand than it is to hold a book up with one hand.

3) I'm really neurotic about keeping my books in the same physical condition they were in when I bought them, and with the Kindle I don't have to worry about creasing the spine or bending the pages. Also: I love being able to highlight the digital text. I never mark up my physical books because I don't want to make a permanent change to them.

message 71: by Debumere (new)

Debumere I have a Sony Reader and use it now and then but still tend to stick to paperback. There wasn't an option on the poll for Yes, I use an e-reader but also like real books.

message 72: by Thomas (new)

Thomas I do not like the idea of reading on a tablet, I would rather get a dedicated e-reader. The most recent rendition of the nook is particularly pleasing. My mother has one, and I would not be displeased if I could have one, though I do not find it essential.

message 73: by Alvaro (new)

Alvaro I have a Sony Reader, a Kindle Fire, and my wife has an Ipad. I read mostly in my kindle fire. The main reaseon is that i use it to work and i always read at lunch time whit it. But i prefer the Sony reader e-ink especially for outside reading. And the Ipad is great for comics.
I love real books, but i read a lot and i live in uruguay so lots of titles dont get publish here, that means that ebooks are my only choice most of the time.

message 74: by Zach (new)

Zach Warsh I have a nook but I really want a kindle fire to read and play games on

message 75: by Rhoda (new)

Rhoda Baxter I wish there'd been an option to say 'I read on a tablet because it's convenient but I'd rather have a kindle...or even better, a paper book.'

message 76: by Shelly (new)

Shelly I have a Kindle, which I love, and a Kindle Fire which I also love. I read on them both (my husband is using the older Kindle now) and use the Fire for email, games, Facebook, the Goodreads ap :), and even writing. Still, I'd say I spend most of my time with it reading.

message 77: by Amber (new)

Amber I just got a Kindle Fire for Christmas and absolutely love it! It does so much in such a tiny package; it was really my best gift this year. (:

message 78: by Bev (new)

Bev I have an iPad 2 and since getting it I have read more than ever - can carry so many books with me and I ALWAYS have it with me so can make the best of any spare time I get. I still love paper books though and buy the physical copy of any that I think I will want to keep, as well as my much loved photographic books.

message 79: by Jessica (new)

Jessica Well it the Nook Tablet..so its kinda meant for reading but yeah. I love it and its so awesome for travel and such.

message 80: by Kevin (new)

Kevin Jepson I use my iPhone and love it.

message 81: by Sara (new)

Sara I got a kindle touch last month and I love it, I have a tendency to trash my books when I read them, bending the spine, folding pages etc...so the kindle is fantastic for me, personally.

message 82: by Katie (new)

Katie I have a first edition 3G wifi Nook that I just can't part with! I go out of my way to get ebooks over regular books!

message 83: by Jennie (new)

Jennie I'm smiling at all the "old-school" comments. I've had a Nook for a couple of years now and I love it. I thought I wouldn't - I was in the old school camp, but I replaced my rotary phone years ago.
Books don't go away simply because they are e-books. The nook is hardly cold and impersonal. The words are what matters. How they are published is not the point. The words are my friends, not the printed page.

I use to be just like you! I LOVED they way they smelled, felt, and I liked being able to turn the pages and see what I've read verses how much more I have to go. But when I finally caved and bought my Nook, I was smitten! It's like carrying an entire library with you everywhere you go! Plus, you have a chance to purchase new books and have them instantly with a tap of a finger. You gotta admit thats pretty conveniant. = )

message 85: by Razmatus (new)

Razmatus yea, could be... but still, the feeling when you go to a shop, stare at the shelves and then finally pick up something you like, then take it out of the shelf, look it over, pay for it and go home with your new prize, then going to your room, getting comfy and start reading...

im not against the readers, but im not going to get one :)

Jennie Razmatus wrote: "yea, could be... but still, the feeling when you go to a shop, stare at the shelves and then finally pick up something you like, then take it out of the shelf, look it over, pay for it and go home ..."

E-readers haven't stopped my ability to browse a bookstore (that would be the work of five children). I find I rely on book recommendations from friends, browsing through Amazon and Goodreads, etc. And I still can go home and crack open my book. It's just lighter and more convenient.

Katie Razmatus wrote: "yea, could be... but still, the feeling when you go to a shop, stare at the shelves and then finally pick up something you like, then take it out of the shelf, look it over, pay for it and go home ..."

I can agree with that. I STILL do to the bookstore. I still buy books. I also go to book signings and have them signed. I don't usually read the books that I have signed because I don't want to ruin them, but I haven't given up on regular books. I just really like the convenience of my Nook. I use less gas this way... = )

message 88: by Leigh (new)

Leigh Samuels Love my Kindle touch - I commute into NYC everyda and its easier to carry one device with multiple books on it then stuffing 2 or 3 books in my bag: although I still read aa "real" boook to. Nothing like have the pages right in your hands!

message 89: by Samantha (new)

Samantha I read books in paper form, on my Kindle, on my iPhone, on my computer (iCloud), and listen to audio books both on CD and on my phone (MP3 Overdrive app).....all are wonderful mediums for books....bring them on....!

message 90: by Olivia (new)

Olivia I have a NOOK Color and I love reading books on it!

message 91: by Nancy (new)

Nancy I want to get one but only for books from the library that are only available as e-books

message 92: by Razmatus (new)

Razmatus no problem with actual copies if you know how to handle them... I read through A song of ice and fire books, of which only A dance with dragons was hardback and the rest were pretty sturdy paperbacks... no offense but I bet most of you would have them bent like hell and scarred at the side of the binding, pages barely holding on after one read... mine have no scars, are veeeeeeeeery slightly bent and the only sign of use is the little grey stain from sweat on the side of pages :)

so yea, still physical books :)

message 93: by Cara (new)

Cara I have a Nook and to tell you the truth, I would prefer to read a real book so I switch back and forth but one good thing about the Nook: I've read a lot more books than I would've with reg. books bc they are so cheap on thee Nook.

message 94: by Razmatus (new)

Razmatus I dont eat books lol, so spending 5-10 euros on a book from time to time is nice... and plus I sometimes manage to get a real treat of a bargain - ASOIAF set for 24 €, Complete chronicles of Conan for 10 €, A dance with dragons for 10.50 €... yea I got employee discount but still haha :)

message 95: by Matthew (last edited Mar 11, 2012 01:53PM) (new)

Matthew Sort of crappy choices for answering the question, in my opinion. "Do you use your tablet (iPad/Kindle Fire/etc.) primarily for reading?" and no option to choose "Yes, I have a 'tablet/ereader' and I read books on it, but I also read paper books." Or something to that effect.

I answered "Yes. I read books on my tablet and love it" because it was the only answer that accurately represented my feelings toward ereaders. But, it's still an incomplete answer.

I think, based on the wording of the poll question, the answers should have been written as follows:

1. Yes, I have a tablet/ereader and I use it primarily for reading.
2. I have a tablet/ereader, but I don't use it primarily for reading (I read, access the Web, watch movies, etc. on it).
3. I do not have a tablet/ereader, but plan to get one.
4. I do not have a tablet/ereader and do not have plans to get one.

These answers actually address the poll question, whereas those in the poll as it is do so very vaguely, if at all.

Or better yet, since the poll question is really a simple "yes or no" question, answer choices could have been the following and would have more accurately provided meaningful data related to the poll question.

1. Yes, I use my tablet/ereader primarily for reading.
2. No, I do not use my tablet/ereader primarily for reading.

message 96: by Joshua Rosenblum (new)

Joshua Rosenblum I voted yes, even though I have the Kindle 3 and a Kindle Touch (not technically tablets). But they have completely replaced paper books for me. If something is not available on Kindle, I'm not reading it.

message 97: by Cindy (new)

Cindy I feel like I have to add a comment to this even though the question wasn't "Do you prefer reading on your Kindle or in real books?" I have a Kindle, and I do rather enjoy it. It's so easy to download WAAAAAAAY too may books, which I love, and getting samples and all that good stuff, but it's not how I primarily read books. I use it mostly for travel and to get free classics, but if there's a more modern book I want to read, I'm more likely to go to the library or buy it.

message 98: by Jeff (new)

Jeff I have a Kindle Fire. I resisted getting one but I received one for Christmas last year and have grudgingly come to appreciate it. I don't buy any of my favorite books for it, but for throw away reading its great. I like the aesthetics of physical books and I love to re-read my favorites in that format. The best thing about a Kindle is the convenience.

message 99: by Catherine (new)

Catherine I have a Kindle and an iPad 2. Since getting the iPad my OH uses the Kindle and i do all of my reading on the iPad
