But wait, when I'm reading more than one book at a time or, heaven forbid, more than three (some ebooks) I use a lock of hair given to me by my first lover to remember the ebook place, a leaf found at the peak of Mt. Everest for my second paper book, my librarian's birth certificate for my third paper book and a glowing ember to mark my place in the montly magazine I receive.

Use author's Awesome holographic 3D winking blinking bookmark for "The Stillness of Time Travel" after I lost a years-long-struggled-for cheque from MegaCorp Bell, and library loan receipt tape until got more winky blinkies. Kobo keeps eBooks.

My kindle holds it for me. If it's an actual book, I use homemade bookmarks that my daughter and I made together to get he excited about reading.
Ereader does it. My regular books I use cards or drawings made by my grandkids
I use a wonderfully whittled wooden bookmark. If this isn't at hand then I sit rocking in a corner because I keep losing my page!
I use a binder clip.
A leather bookmark from Jamaica Inn.
I don't keep track of where I am. I open to a page that looks interesting or about where I left off, reading random bits from it and piecing together the story when I think I've read all/most of it.
Paperclips work pretty well for me, but I also use bookmarks.

oh and i forgot one of the best ereader features, you have a dictionary or several dictionaries at your fingertips for looking up any word without having to move from your page! now, if that's not the coolest feature I don't know what is :D

I still can't edit correctly. Where do you find the complete instructions, when I edit I read a book it goes right back to "to-read"
i use anything that i have at hand when i start reading: papers, bookmarks, cards, ... If it is an ebook, I mostly use goodreads. Unless i read it on my Kindle then I use both. ;)
I use a stiff bookmark (often a paint chip) to mark my current place, but random pieces of paper are scattered throughout the rest of the book so I can take notes on them. Lots of receipts end up in my books.
I use a number of the above, but not in the combination offered so I chose Bacon. :DI usually remember. If I can't, I flip through the book until I come across the last page I remember reading. Sometimes I'll use Goodreads - but I don't often update my last read page so it's not entirely reliable.
I read e-books which usually remembers for me (not all the time).
Sometimes if I think I'll forget, I'll use bookmarks. If I can't find a bookmark, I fold the corner of the page if the book belongs to me. I rely on my memory if it doesn't. I normally do that now if there's a passage I want to remember for one reason or another.
But at one point, I used to do other options. Maybe my answer should have been all of the above. I'm pretty certain I used to use a sock at one point...

Dog Earring pages is a pet peve of mine. I cant stand it. Makes the books look horrible to me. Right now.. I am reading most of my books on my Sony Ereader, but when i do read paper/hard back books, I tend to use my "twilight" book mark. I have a new moon one and one of all of them from the first book. I keep them together in a plastic cover i bought the First twilight book marker with... I know I know.. But if i dont use that book marker.. Its a 3D Giraffe one i have .. They are my favorite animals..!! HEHE

I read a lot of eBoooks. :) But if I don't, I use anything I can find.
I usually use bus tickets or receipts but lately I'm trying to use a bookmark... I'm probably gonna fail and use receipts again.
I believe magnetic bookmarks are a blessing ;p .. But I like the idea of using Foreign money bills or playing cards ..
bacon works for everything, doesn't it? I either use my booklight, the bookjacket itself or a canvass elastic strap. I don't dog-ear anymore either. My son cured me of that one!
I use dogears...but if it's a really special book, a bookmark or the dust cover.
Just a regular thin card bookmark. Anything that can possibly damage a book like metal bookmarks are out. And anyone turning over the corners, urghhh! Same goes for using the dustjacket. Come on, have some respect!

Dog ears aren't bad, they're more reliable than bookmarks, because bookmarks can fall out.

When I was young I marked where I was in books by folding over pages. Nobody at that time thought that was poor form, including my school's librarians. But, since I've found magnetic bookmarks, they're my favorite way to keep my place in the books I read.
I read e-books but I have these copper things called 'page marks' that slide on the edge of the page. They are like paper clips, but designed to be used in books and not leave a mark or impression on the page. Although if you leave them in for months, you will get an impression on the page.
I use Kindle so it's easy but for paperback i just love to fold the corner :P

I try to use a bookmark that came from the Berkeley Public Library as a reward for their Early Reader Program. It was my oldest son's when he first learned to read. Someone had lightly penciled in 'fuk' above the "I Love To Read!" caption. Now, whenever I read something good, the joke is, "Fuck! I love to read!"...

I collect bookmarks, but the one I actually use the most is a ribbon bookmark.
this was hard to decide because I use fancy bookmarks but I also read books on my kindle fire so I couldn't decide. I have only bought a couple of books on my kindle so I would have to go with the fancy bookmarks
Those of you who object to folding over pages in books to keep one's place, you might enjoy the essay "Never Do That to a Book" in the book Ex Libris: Confessions of a Common Reader. Anne Fadiman talks about courtly love vs. carnal love of books. The book is fabulous and the essay is interesting. I thought of it when reading people's opinions about this method of bookmarking pages.

Personally, I don't really like e-books. I prefer to turn the pages, smell the book, and not get headaches from the screen. But that's just me.

I just voted clow cards for the Cardcaptor Sakura, Volume 1 reference. Usually it's all ebooks, or I finish books in one sitting.
Using "dog-ears" or using a pen "because I write in books." I thought the death penalty still applied to these offences!

Not one bit. I also offer to lend paperbacks to others only on very rare occasions, preceded by a lecture on book care. The offerees usually decline to borrow by the time I'm finished. :P

It's not ephemeral, like a newspaper. It's a book - it can have a life beyond you. Treat it well enough that it can be passed on to other readers.Think of all the people who don't have access to books. It's not like when Mother said "Clean your plate; there are starving children in India," and we said "Ok, so ship my cabbage to them!" The book actually could be shipped.
I like the one who uses the Index Card from H.S. with bookmark written on it. I used to do that when I was a teen and I didn't read as much as I do now. :-)
