I always end on a chapter and i use a bookmark (write-in)

  28 votes, 0.0%

Most of the time I end on a chapter so I can remember where I left off. If I don't end on a chapter I'll use a bookmark. If there are no bookmarks on hand and I'm too lazy to find something else I'll use the book jacket. If the book doesn't have a jacket I'll use something random like a tissue, scrap of paper, a pencil, etc. If all else fails I REFUSE to dog-ear a page and end up loosing my place only to eventually find it later. In my mind, it's fancy if you actually paid for it, heh. ;) Definitely--MistyG--if it's a bacon bookmark! But feel free to use your best judgment.

I use Goodreads bookmarks. :)

message 5: by rivka (new)

rivka So do I. They're pretty fancy. ;)

But I went with with "ordinary", because they lack tassels, beads, or any other doohickeys.

message 6: by Lisa (last edited Feb 19, 2012 08:46PM) (new)

Lisa Vegan I use magnetic bookmarks. I'm used to them now and they're all I'll use. They're very helpful when I take books out and about as they never fall out of the book.

So, I voted for fancy bookmarks. I also enjoy using Goodreads' status updates, and I add notes to them too, but that's not how I keep track of where I am in books.

message 7: by Brian (new)

Brian Woah, how do they work? there are magnets on each side of the page? Still paper-thin though?

I've had a dramatic increase in bookmarks "falling out" now that my 16 month old daughter is running around getting into much mischief. ;)

message 8: by rivka (new)

rivka 6 foot bookshelves.

And pray she doesn't think scaling them is fun. ;)

message 9: by Brian (new)

Brian Hahahha! Yeah, ours is a little taller than that even. But we've had to clear out the bottom shelf completely (when crawling started). Second shelf is packed full, well within her reach now that she's walking (third is vulnerable as well, but there's only one row of books so they're harder for her to get a good grip on), but we keep a close eye on her when she goes near. ;)

Lisa Vegan Brian wrote: "Woah, how do they work? there are magnets on each side of the page? Still paper-thin though?

Yeah, they're relatively thin. I have some that are paper and the bottom front and back have magnets and when you hang them over the page the front and back stick together, and I have some that are a bit heavier, though still thin, where the entire bookmark is magnetic and when you hang the ends over the page the whole thing sticks together.

I've bought most of mine at my museum gifts shops and I've seen them in catalogs too. They're really great!

ETA: I don't think they're safe from 16 month old kids though. Some are strong but most can be pulled out of the book fairly easily and with a kid that age, most likely with torn book pages too.

message 11: by rivka (new)

rivka Brian, bottom shelves are for board books and kid toys for a few years, in my experience. (Plus, if her stuff is there, the books one shelf up aren't quite as enticing.)

Eventually, you get those shelves back. Shortly before they start stealing your books to actually read them. ;D

message 12: by rivka (new)

rivka I've tried magnetic bookmarks, and while I understand the appeal, they're not for me. I prefer thinner than even the thinnest magnetic ones I've seen.

message 13: by Abenet (new)

Abenet I always lose bookmarks once I take them out of the book and I hate bent corners of pages. I guess GR status update is a good thing to use, even though I don't always update my status regularly.

message 14: by Claire (new)

Claire Er why is there no option for turning books upside down? That's what I do! :)

message 15: by Anne (new)

Oops, I meant to make this poll allow write-in votes, should be allowed now! :)

message 17: by Brian (new)

Brian I used to be really weird about bookmarking. I'd use random scraps of paper (usually receipts of some kind), would never allow myself to reuse the same scrap for another book, and would leave the bookmark in the book on the shelf after reading. Thankfully, I've moved on.

Maria Schneider Either ebooks or generally read most books in one or two settings. When I do use a bookmark, it's a scrap of paper.

message 29: by Sage (new)

Sage Collins Is there any way to vote for multiple answers. I do most of these at one time or another.

message 30: by Amanda (new)

Amanda Now that I use ebooks the Kindle keeps track for me, but for those paperback/hardback books my answer would have to be:
I use theater tickets, book receipts, scraps of paper, book marks, you name it, it has probably found its way in between my pages from time to time

I do use the GR updates, but mostly for challenge books to keep me motivated.

message 31: by Natasha (new)

Natasha I have many, many bookmarks and somehow they all run away and I end up using scraps of paper. The shame. But I'd never in a million years dog ear a book or use the dust jacket.

message 32: by Natalie (new)

Natalie Pietro Sage wrote: "Is there any way to vote for multiple answers. I do most of these at one time or another."

I felt the same way. There should have been a button for muliple answers. It depends on the book I'm reading how I'm going to save my place in the book.

message 33: by Sam (new)

Sam I have 11 bookmarks. 4 are regular bookmarks, 3 of them are from authors that sent them with their books that I had won off the computer, and the fourth one is one I found in a book that was given to me by a friend, it was Garfield so I was happy when I found it I love Garfield. My other 7 bookmarks are ones I made myself because I like making things. My favorite one has to be my Zombie hand, it was inspired by one of my favorite shows, The Walking Dead, that's the one that I seem to use the most and another one I use a lot is my Supernatural bookmark I made.

message 34: by Cyrille (new)

message 37: by Lorie (new)

Lorie Ballard rivka wrote: "What makes a bookmark "fancy" v. "ordinary"? I need to know whether to change my vote! ;)"
I would say maybe a fancy one is one that you made (or received by someone), and an ordinary one is just a single piece of cardstock, nothing really done to make it special.

message 38: by Lorie (new)

Lorie Ballard I like to make my own bookmarks.

message 39: by Sarah (new)

Sarah I have a variety- fancy bookmarks, basic bookmarks, homemade ones, sometimes I use those slips with the due date in library books. I also have a reader so it has the built in feature. But my fancy harp style ones are my favorite.

message 40: by Katy (new)

Katy Well, I use an e-reader, so that helps; when I read a p-book, I usually use a bookmark, but if I can't find that, then I'll use whatever is lying around. I also keep track with Goodreads progress updates when I can. so choosing only one answer is not really appropriate.

I usually read from my eReader, but when it's a print copy I use whatever I can find. I tend to lose my book marks...and that "whatever I can find", so I have to find something new. Never money bills though, I hardly ever have those lying around.

cindy I usually used anything from tickets to bookmarks as a bookmark. I really hate when people borrow my books and return them full of "dog-ear" pages or they left them open facing down until the back's broken!! (⌣́_⌣̀)

Alicia Dog-earing = book-destruction :-|
It's a tragedy!

Sally Aw, I'd like to be able to select multiple here. I have bookmarks, but if the bookmark happens to fall out, then the GR progress update is my back-up! :D

I was wondering the same thing. I just asked my housemate whether my bookmarks are fancy and he shrugged. They're pretty, and I seek out ones I like - particularly while travelling - but possibly not fancy. Maybe "fancy" = those metal hook things with dangly bits. Dunno!

(I like the two people who said they use bacon the mark where they're up to!)

Snail in Danger (Sid) Nicolaides I use fancy bookmarks, regular bookmarks, random scraps of paper and postcards and junk mail, the dust jacket flap ... basically anything that won't damage the book. I too would like to be able to select multiple options. :)

Years ago I used to dog-ear book pages, but I don't anymore.

David I use ebooks now but in the past i've used pretty much all the options (including the bacon one as well lol).

Lucy I actually use the little train times booklet they give out at train stations. At least I'll know when to catch my train xD

Belkis my goodness I'm so attached to my Kindle Touch & my regular Kindle that I can't even think of going anywhere without it! so easy for everything. you don't have to think as it keeps your last page active. you can make notes and highlights and have them all saved with your book. you don't have to worry about loosing or misplacing a book. or damaging a cover, or running out of physical space! goodness if i had to store all of the books I own I's literally be the lady that lived in a book! i still have many of my favorite books in hardcover because i do treasure them as well as many many beautiful bookmarks sort of like treasure reminiscent of good things that will eventually become obsolete, but the ereader is the best thing ever!
