But wait, when I'm reading more than one book at a time or, heaven forbid, more than three (some ebooks) I use a lock of hair given to me by my first lover to remember the ebook place, a leaf found at the peak of Mt. Everest for my second paper book, my librarian's birth certificate for my third paper book and a glowing ember to mark my place in the montly magazine I receive.

Dog-ear pages, paperclips, bobby pins, hair clips, assorted sticky notes of random shapes and sizes and colors, tissue, random scraps of paper, metal bookmarks, paper bookmarks, plastic bookmarks, pens and pencils, binder clip, movie tickets, business cards, string, leave the book lying open face down, memory... and for ebooks, either my reader remembers where I am, or I electronically bookmark. ;)

Use author's Awesome holographic 3D winking blinking bookmark for "The Stillness of Time Travel" after I lost a years-long-struggled-for cheque from MegaCorp Bell, and library loan receipt tape until got more winky blinkies. Kobo keeps eBooks.

My kindle holds it for me. If it's an actual book, I use homemade bookmarks that my daughter and I made together to get he excited about reading.
Ereader does it. My regular books I use cards or drawings made by my grandkids
I use a wonderfully whittled wooden bookmark. If this isn't at hand then I sit rocking in a corner because I keep losing my page!
I use a binder clip.

I don't keep track of where I am. I open to a page that looks interesting or about where I left off, reading random bits from it and piecing together the story when I think I've read all/most of it.
Paperclips work pretty well for me, but I also use bookmarks.

What makes a bookmark "fancy" v. "ordinary"? I need to know whether to change my vote! ;)

So do I. They're pretty fancy. ;)But I went with with "ordinary", because they lack tassels, beads, or any other doohickeys.
I use magnetic bookmarks. I'm used to them now and they're all I'll use. They're very helpful when I take books out and about as they never fall out of the book. So, I voted for fancy bookmarks. I also enjoy using Goodreads' status updates, and I add notes to them too, but that's not how I keep track of where I am in books.

Hahahha! Yeah, ours is a little taller than that even. But we've had to clear out the bottom shelf completely (when crawling started). Second shelf is packed full, well within her reach now that she's walking (third is vulnerable as well, but there's only one row of books so they're harder for her to get a good grip on), but we keep a close eye on her when she goes near. ;)

Yeah, they're relatively thin. I have some that are paper and the bottom front and back have magnets and when you hang them over the page the front and back stick together, and I have some that are a bit heavier, though still thin, where the entire bookmark is magnetic and when you hang the ends over the page the whole thing sticks together.
I've bought most of mine at my museum gifts shops and I've seen them in catalogs too. They're really great!
ETA: I don't think they're safe from 16 month old kids though. Some are strong but most can be pulled out of the book fairly easily and with a kid that age, most likely with torn book pages too.
Brian, bottom shelves are for board books and kid toys for a few years, in my experience. (Plus, if her stuff is there, the books one shelf up aren't quite as enticing.)Eventually, you get those shelves back. Shortly before they start stealing your books to actually read them. ;D
I've tried magnetic bookmarks, and while I understand the appeal, they're not for me. I prefer thinner than even the thinnest magnetic ones I've seen.
I always lose bookmarks once I take them out of the book and I hate bent corners of pages. I guess GR status update is a good thing to use, even though I don't always update my status regularly.
Er why is there no option for turning books upside down? That's what I do! :)
I use scraps of paper that come to hand if reading a paperback, or hardcover without dust jacket, but I use the jacket if it has one. I don't read hardcovers as often, though...

I used to be really weird about bookmarking. I'd use random scraps of paper (usually receipts of some kind), would never allow myself to reuse the same scrap for another book, and would leave the bookmark in the book on the shelf after reading. Thankfully, I've moved on.

What does it mean when all the options are your answer? I've pretty much, at one time or another, done all of the above.
I always loose book-marks, so i end up just put anything in it, from hairbands, to pieces of ripped paper of reports, and etc! u name it, and it's probably been in my book
Either ebooks or generally read most books in one or two settings. When I do use a bookmark, it's a scrap of paper.
I use the papers that are sticking out of the book when I pick up a hold. I've been using the same bookmark since Mar. 2011.
I like to get bookmarks from authors (when I can) and use them when I'm reading their books. Now having an ereader, I put the book mark in the pocket of reader cover...weird I know...but that's me!

I have many, many bookmarks and somehow they all run away and I end up using scraps of paper. The shame. But I'd never in a million years dog ear a book or use the dust jacket.

I have 11 bookmarks. 4 are regular bookmarks, 3 of them are from authors that sent them with their books that I had won off the computer, and the fourth one is one I found in a book that was given to me by a friend, it was Garfield so I was happy when I found it I love Garfield. My other 7 bookmarks are ones I made myself because I like making things. My favorite one has to be my Zombie hand, it was inspired by one of my favorite shows, The Walking Dead, that's the one that I seem to use the most and another one I use a lot is my Supernatural bookmark I made.

I have a variety- fancy bookmarks, basic bookmarks, homemade ones, sometimes I use those slips with the due date in library books. I also have a reader so it has the built in feature. But my fancy harp style ones are my favorite.
Well, I use an e-reader, so that helps; when I read a p-book, I usually use a bookmark, but if I can't find that, then I'll use whatever is lying around. I also keep track with Goodreads progress updates when I can. so choosing only one answer is not really appropriate.

I usually read from my eReader, but when it's a print copy I use whatever I can find. I tend to lose my book marks...and that "whatever I can find", so I have to find something new. Never money bills though, I hardly ever have those lying around.
I usually used anything from tickets to bookmarks as a bookmark. I really hate when people borrow my books and return them full of "dog-ear" pages or they left them open facing down until the back's broken!! (⌣́_⌣̀)

I use fancy bookmarks, regular bookmarks, random scraps of paper and postcards and junk mail, the dust jacket flap ... basically anything that won't damage the book. I too would like to be able to select multiple options. :)Years ago I used to dog-ear book pages, but I don't anymore.
I use ebooks now but in the past i've used pretty much all the options (including the bacon one as well lol).
I actually use the little train times booklet they give out at train stations. At least I'll know when to catch my train xD
my goodness I'm so attached to my Kindle Touch & my regular Kindle that I can't even think of going anywhere without it! so easy for everything. you don't have to think as it keeps your last page active. you can make notes and highlights and have them all saved with your book. you don't have to worry about loosing or misplacing a book. or damaging a cover, or running out of physical space! goodness if i had to store all of the books I own I's literally be the lady that lived in a book! i still have many of my favorite books in hardcover because i do treasure them as well as many many beautiful bookmarks sort of like treasure reminiscent of good things that will eventually become obsolete, but the ereader is the best thing ever!
