Dawn It's actually four books in the Riftwar series, you left off the concluding volume A Darkness at Sethanon.

message 2: by Jon (new)

Jon I did that on purpose. I only included the first three books of each series (Malazan has ten).

To see all the books in each series, please click on the link above the book covers.

Good morning! :)

message 5: by Sandra (new)

Sandra I forgot to put the link in the message I sent! Duh. Hope everyone finds it. They will only let me send one message a day.

message 6: by Sandra (new)

Sandra Also, we're going to need a discussion leader for which ever series wins. Anyone ready to make that commitment?

message 7: by Amelia (new)

Amelia Darn it, the one I nominated didn't win. Fortunately, both of these series are ones I'd like to read. (I think I'll have to read Inda anyway.)

There's always next time. :)

Me, too.

If Malazan wins (like I am hoping) I would be happy to be involved. We will probably need a couple anyway!

Captain Sir Roddy, R.N. (Ret.) I am hoping that 'Malazan' prevails too, and I am more than willing to help with the discussions. Beyond being just one of the best fantasy series I've become involved with, 'The Malazan Book of the Fallen' is really some very good modern literature with messages that speak loudly to us in our time.

This is so close! We almost should do two reads! They are so different they appeal to different people

Jon Maggie wrote: "This is so close! We almost should do two reads! They are so different they appeal to different people"

That's an excellent idea. Anyone else want to chime in on that suggestion?

I can see it now ... I'll be reading three series all at once and all my other book club reads.

I guess I can sleep when I'm dead. :P

message 14: by Sandra (new)

Sandra I would have no objection to doing two simultaneous reads. The only issue might be maintaining interest, as it does tend to die down in a long series. And someone would have to be responsible for leading discussions, getting someone to fill in if they can't do it for a time, and all that. If enough people are interested, we can certainly give it a try.

Captain Sir Roddy, R.N. (Ret.) I would absolutely support two concurrent series reads. I had no plans to read 'Riftwar' again anyway, as I am just getting into the 'Malazan' series. I would be more than willing to help with the discussions too. This is a deeply complex and extraordinarily fascinating series and I am sure that I will get ever so much more out of it in a group read and discussion format. Cheers! Chris

Sandra The other problem I see is a tremendous number of threads. I'm getting a headache trying to think how to organize the forum!

message 17: by Jon (new)

Jon This are just some thoughts I've had today (during meetings at work and on the commute home):

Main series starting on 1st of the month: whoever wins this poll

Alternate series starting on 15th of the month: runner up

.... OR ....

Do them both concurrently, stressing that no one should feel obligated to do both series.

Hopefully, the new spoiler tag will cut the number of threads in 'half' ... maybe. :)

message 19: by Sandra (new)

Sandra Janny says she can contact Feist about making a guest appearance and perhaps getting someone from his Crydee site to run the discussion. How would you all feel about that?

message 20: by Dawn (new)

Dawn That would be awesome...

message 21: by Julie (new)

Julie I've read The Riftwar Saga probably wouldn't mind reading it again but I was really looking forward to The Malazan Series. I just loved the discussion we had last year and I thought there would be so much to discuss and then I would HAVE to read it. So I guess what I'm saying is that I like the first and 15th idea.

message 22: by Sandra (new)

Sandra Well then everyone's happy which makes me happy:)

message 23: by Janny (new)

Janny Ray is willing to make a guest appearance to answer Q&A as some other authors have done in the past.

I didn't broach getting a specialist to run the discussion - yet - better if one of those from the group stands forward. Can check back on this as need be.

Of course IF the discussion includes Empire, I am willing to stand forward, there. (Ray would be with that, too)...I've been silent till now to let the vote fall where it would.

I would also read into Malazan if there are not too many balls in the air on my home front.

message 24: by Sandra (new)

Sandra It's now official. Riftwar discussion will begin Feb. 1, and Mazalan on Feb. 15. We will need volunteers to lead each discussion.

And if someone could post me a link to the correct first book to use for Riftwar, I'd appreciate it. Dawn??? Thanks. I can then post it in the group heading.

We will read one book per month in each series. You can decide on your own whether or not you want to do both series. Thank you all for your active interest and here's to two great ongoing discussions of two great series!

Thank you, Sandra

Dawn Posted the book list in the other thread for you :)

message 26: by Jon (new)

Jon Dawn wrote: "Posted the book list in the other thread for you :)"

I just added all those books to the 'to-read' shelf for the group, as well as for the other series.

Thanks everyone!

message 27: by Sandra (new)

Sandra Thanks guys. Who wants to start off the Riftwar discussion? Dawn.

message 28: by Dawn (new)

Dawn Responded in the other thread! LOL, I need to open all my threads before I start replying :)

message 29: by Sandra (new)

Sandra Dawn wrote: "Responded in the other thread! LOL, I need to open all my threads before I start replying :)"

:D I'll set up a folder for each book, then maybe others will think of topics for discussion.

Thanks, Nicola. Do you want to lead the discussion for any of the books?

Ok. Maybe you guys can work it out between yourselves. Christopher also volunteered, and maybe Maggie?

message 32: by Jon (new)

Jon Nicola wrote: "You might want to add in the Esslemont books for Malazan. "

Do we have a consensus among the Malazan 'crowd' regarding The Esslemont books? If so, I'll be happy to modify the to-be-read schedule and add in the books when/where you all want them.

message 33: by Sandra (new)

Sandra I had mentioned them first because a knowledgeable person has told me the discussion at Tor.com was insisting on them, but then it was pooh poohed by a couple of group members. We could list them and point out that they're optional.

Captain Sir Roddy, R.N. (Ret.) Nicola wrote: "There was little feedback when I posted the suggested reading order from the Malazan forums in the Malazan thread here. I don't know whether silence indicates agreement or silence indicates people ..."

I agree with Nicola, if we are actually going to read the 'entire' Malazan series, I think we should include ICE's books at the appropriate points. If we are just reading Erikson's books, then just read them in order of publication. I am open to either option.
