Yeah I think they all stand relatively well alone, it's one of those series where the premise and worldbuilding gets repeated a lot at the beginning in case the reader isn't caught up on all the many books.
Question -- I thought that we did both "close calls" and "biggest losers" in this month . . . or is my memory failing . . .
Even if it is moot--Moreta: Dragonlady of Pern is a myth remembered in song (or a long ago past history story) that ia remembered in the first of the Pern books several hundred years later. I have read it and it is short (and IMHO not as good as Dragonquest or Dragonflight) but I cannot remember how much background introducing the worldbuilding. McCaffery is a pretty good author, though, so I think she should have filled in the blanks
I am really not interested in ANY of these books . . . I voted for The Weapon Makers because I have it, but it is obviously not going to win.
Wow, Mechanique is taking quite a beating here. I was a bit afraid of Anathem winning since it's another thousand-pager, but I've got to read it sometime. Been taking on a lot of 600+ books this year. I'll need to get an early start to finish it by December. The Weapon Makers is short, but I'm not a huge fan of ATVV.

See my note in the forum when I put up the poll. You might not have been involved, but Kalin, Acorn & I talked about it in the Mods group. Starplex is the Big Loser book, a "Mod's Choice" rather than a poll. We won't make a habit of not having a poll, but we felt it was justified here as Starplex has been nominated and lost SEVEN times, i.e. maybe the biggest loser of all?

I voted for that one too.

Thanks. Alzheimer's is apparently setting in. I forgot about Starplex.
