Katie The Pearl. Shoot me.

message 2: by Katie (new)

Katie Ken just reminded me of "The Tale of Two Cities." Man that sucked.

message 3: by Kellie (new)

Kellie I absolutely hated Tale of Two Cities. Typically I loved to read and enjoyed having to do so. *ducks* But "Tale" was a drag.

message 4: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie Billy Budd by Herman Melvilee... yawn

message 5: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth OH MY GOODNESS
i HATED "Great Expectations"
good lord...

message 6: by Brigid ✩ (last edited Oct 11, 2008 09:31AM) (new)

Brigid ✩ slaughterhouse-five. i have to read it right now and ... gah. i can't stand it.

i had to read lord of the flies last year ... that was pretty bad.

i had to read animal farm, to kill a mockingbird, and the outsiders for eighth grade.

animal farm was okay. to kill a mockingbird was pretty good. the outsiders was amazing. :D

message 7: by Helena (new)

Helena "The Jewess of Toledo" by Lion Feuchtwanger. Did not finish; made my mum to write review for me.

"Quo Vadis" by Sienkiewicz was quite non-enjoyable, too.

message 8: by Ravena (new)

Ravena Ditto for Great Expectations - and I liked reading in high school!

message 9: by Karen (new)

Karen Lord Jim by Joseph Conrad. It's the only book in high school that I didn't finish because I just couldn't force myself to do so.

message 10: by Susan (new)

Susan I agree!! The Pearl was only narrowly edged out by Heart of Darkness...

message 11: by Hope (new)

Hope Old Man and the Sea by Hemingway

message 12: by Naomi (new)

Naomi The Odyssey- Homer
The Epic of Gilgamesh

message 13: by Nikki (new)

Nikki The Old Man and the Sea. Booooring! I know, I know, its Hemingway but honestly the only good thing I can say about it is it was short.

message 14: by Cheri (new)

Cheri i agree with great expectations. ugh.

the custom of the time was to pay by the word - there could not be a better example of why that is a bad idea

message 15: by Annalisa (new)

Annalisa Moby Dick is another one I was required to read that is so long I couldn't get into.

message 16: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Ugh Wuthering Heights!

message 17: by Stinkydiver (new)

Stinkydiver All Quiet on the Western Front!

message 18: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Madame Bovary. :P

message 19: by Suzanne Shumaker (new)

Suzanne Shumaker Tale of two cities.

message 20: by Carol (new)

Carol Moby Dick, by far. Although now I appreciate it a little better because it was the springboard for a book I very much enjoyed: Ahab's Wife by Sena Jeter Naslund.

message 21: by Ilze (new)

Ilze "The Beadle" (Pauline Smith)

message 22: by E. G. (new)

E. G. The Jungle, hands-down. Gruesome, such a total downer too. Moral of the story=life sucks!

message 23: by Res (new)

Res William Faulkner, Light In August.

message 24: by martha (new)

martha Thomas Pynchon, The Crying of Lot 49. Which I was assigned at least three times. Ugh.

message 25: by Lindsey (new)

Lindsey A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens. I like Dickens but this one almost killed me!

message 26: by Mister Jones (new)

Mister Jones Joseph Andrews by Henry Fielding; for some reason, even today, that one book almost turned me away from reading altogether.

message 27: by Lyssy (new)

Lyssy hey i have to write an 8 page paper on Dracula for my English class. if anyone has read that book could you please comment me and help me find a topic. Thankssss!

xoxoxoxo

message 28: by Lisa (new)

Lisa My absolute LEAST favorite book was The Old Man and the Sea by Hemmingway. Talk about a waste of my life.

message 29: by Jessica (new)

Jessica The Awakening by Kate Chopin. Ugh.

message 30: by Geraldine (new)

Geraldine Billy Effing Budd. Lord.

message 31: by [deleted user] (new)

Probably either "The Scarlet Letter" or "Lord of the Flies."

message 32: by Mandy (new)

Mandy The Red Badge of Courage...Just kill me!

message 33: by Marley (new)

Marley All these books are actually GOOD. Try reading them again as adults. Really. Actually reading Catcher in the Rye as an adult would probably suck...but as a teenager it's great. I'll even take my own advice and attempt my scorned Heart of Darkness again.

message 34: by Haley (new)

Haley Walsh The Road made me want to strangle myself. Okay not that bad. But it came pretty close.

message 35: by Jessica (last edited Nov 14, 2008 02:29AM) (new)

Jessica The Odyssey. <- I'm not sure that's spelled right, but I hated that book. I think the reason why though is because I didn't understand it really all that well. If I were to read it now, I would most likely like the book now that I can understand it.

message 36: by [deleted user] (new)

I voted The Scarlet Letter, but The Awakening comes in a close second.

message 37: by Anthony (new)

Anthony A Separate Peace.

message 38: by Petra X (new)

Petra X Tale of Two Cities.

message 39: by Kathrynn (new)

Kathrynn Grapes of Wrath. Bleh.

message 40: by Chris (new)

Chris I checked other, because I enjoyed most of the ones listed. (or i didn't read them in hs or college. :) My "other" is "Julius Caesar" by Shakespeare.

message 41: by [deleted user] (new)

I have a three way tie. Johnny Tremain, The Old man and the sea, and Ethan Frome. All god awful, depressing books

message 42: by Timothy (new)

Timothy I voted for Beowulf, but I forgot about Great Expectations. I absolutely despise that book. I started it 3 different times before I was able to force myself to finish it.

message 43: by Jocelyn (new)

Jocelyn Robinson Crusoe

message 44: by Melissa (new)

Melissa A Seperate Peace by John Knowles

message 45: by Sana (new)

Sana Great Expectations and Gulliver's Travels.

I tried Gulliver's Travels later, and it was alright. But I doubt if I'll ever give Great Expectations another go.

message 46: by Amy (new)

Amy Madame Bovary by Flaubert. I have to read it in French no less...

I really enjoyed Catcher in the Rye.

message 47: by Ursula (new)

Ursula I almost went with The Scarlet Letter, which is unsurprisingly a very popular answer. But at least I finished that one (cursing stupid Hester Prynne and her dumb baby Pearl the whole way). AP English taught me, however, that epic poetry requires more fortitude than I have. I managed to not finish Beowulf, The Odyssey, and The Inferno all in one year!

message 48: by Stuart (new)

Stuart Tuesdays With Morry

message 49: by Karen (new)

Karen I loved Wuthering Heights. I know, it's crazy, but I have reread it twice since high school.

message 50: by Sara (new)

Sara The Three Muskateers or Beloved. There was one I hated more but I think I must have blocked the title from my memory.
