Yeah, but Annabeth is good with her mouth, which definately helps in situations, but before she can trick someone, she might already be unconscious, thanks to Katsa or Celaena or Hermione.

Donna Hermione: are you familiar with the term magic and what it means? Sorry, I couldn't let that "weak" remark stand. WEAK DOES NOT MATTER IF YOU ARE THE SECOND MOST BRILLIANT MAGICAL WIZARD EVER! Harry Potter gets first place. Oh, and he is "weak" too.

YES !!!!!!! 100% agree!!!!!!!!!

message 206: by Lia (last edited Jun 17, 2015 09:41AM) (new)

Lia I don't think Hermione would win just because she has magic because she is certainly not the only one. Besides many of them have magic objects. Celaena has fire magic, which wouldn't be as effective, but Alanna certainly has formidable magic powers that are offensive and defensive and she is a knight. Alanna is magically and physically deadly. Also Aerin and Harry Crew both have kelar, which can be very powerful in it's own right when necessary, and they both have Gonturan, the blue sword which can defend against some magic. So already like 4 more people on the list with magic and that's just a couple so I really don't think magic will give the upper hand to Hermione here.

Hermione is not the only one with magic. Many of these characters are brilliant warriors and magicians in there own right.

message 208: by Donna (new)

Donna She is I think the only ones with real all encompassing magic. I've said this all before ad nauseum so.....

message 209: by Valentina (new)

Valentina Clearly Tris Prior win because it is divergent and "can not be controlled" by spells Hermione and Katniss by very agile to be a normal person with a bow.

message 210: by Lia (last edited Jun 17, 2015 12:58PM) (new)

Lia Actually now that I think about it, Aerin from the Hero and the Crown has to win if this is a fight to the death, even though she's not the first person you would think of. She drank from the lake and literally cannot die even if she wanted to die. She is blessed and cursed to be immortal. Plus she is an incredible warrior and has Kelar magic, which can do anything if you have that will for it and she has Gonturan which is a magical, super powerful sword.

So Aerin has to win hands down because she literally CAN'T DIE!

message 211: by Lia (new)

Lia Donna wrote: "She is I think the only ones with real all encompassing magic. I've said this all before ad nauseum so....."

True, but Aerin is magical, a warrior, and immortal. Immortal really just beats everything when it comes to a fight to the death.

SourLemons Tina wrote: "Clearly Tris Prior win because it is divergent and "can not be controlled" by spells Hermione and Katniss by very agile to be a normal person with a bow."

Ummmm...Divergent means being A REGULAR HUMAN BEING THE LAST TIME I CHECKED. YOU ARE TELLING ME THAT HAVING DIFFERENT CHARACTERISTICS AND BEING IMMUNE TO A SIMULATION CREATED BY PEOPLE WILL GIVE HER THE UPPER HAND?
Plus Katniss is only good with a bow, even though she is agile so I don't think she really stands a chance.

Donna, the thing is you keep ignoring the fact that MANY of these women have magic, not just Hermione! And no, Alanna's magic is not less powerful than Hermione's. It's just completely different in the way that it works. Alanna doesn't necessarily even have to speak incantations, and she doesn't need a wand. She can be wielding her magical gift and her lightning-quick (see what I did there, Alanna fans?) sword at the SAME TIME. You are totally justified to vote for Hermione, but unless you've read Song of the Lioness, you can't justify your ongoing argument for her being able to beat Alanna. I have read both series, and I LOVE Hermione, but I also think that if she wanted to start something with Alanna, she would end up dead (or at least disarmed, Alanna doesn't kill when she doesn't have to either).

You definitely could disarm her, but if it was to the death she would win. I mostly mention it because when you start throwing death spells around and playing with assassins and swords, it starts looking like a fight to the death, but it doens't have to be. Although I would really like to see someone tie Aerin up, she ranks up there with Alanna when it comes to warriors, but Alanna with her magical ablities and fighting prowness is obviously a pretty great choice too, as is Celaena. It really just depends on the rules and the exact situation, half the people on this list could win if they had the right situation. If this is a dueling rink, hunger games style, assassinations at night, or all out war is really important when determining who would actually win. Every factor counts with close competition like this.

Bryan Katsa, no doubt. Everyone assumes Hermione is allowed the use of her wand. Without it, she's just a pouty witch with an English accent. Katsa would snap her neck like a chicken. Bella...don't even get me started...one of the weakest female characters ever drawn.

Hi. Poll creator here. YES, Hermione is allowed to use her wand--they're all allowed to use whatever weapons and powers they have. HOWEVER, someone could knock Hermione's wand out of her hand, or break it, and then she'd be on her own... (And also--said this before too--including Bella was a joke. I didn't say it was a good joke, but it was a joke! I also hate her.)

message 222: by Jasz (new)

Jasz I think it's pretty clear Hermione would win. She's not really my favorite but assuming they can all use their wapons. I don't really think you can win against magic... or at least, I don't think you can win against a witch as smart and as powerful as Hermoine (she will be able to cast protection spells and attack others at the very same time).

Definitely agree. Bella is wimpy by herself and compared to these other characters, even though she's on there as a joke. Katsa is wicked good at fighting with just about any kind of weapon and she's my favorite, but she COULD be beaten by someone with powers.

Not forgetting. If Hermione's wand was knocked out of her hand or broken, she would lose the fight. And I think Katsa can disarm her before she's taken down because her skill is survival.

message 228: by Donna (new)

Donna Could. But Hermione is very smart and quick. Hermione wins!

message 229: by Nidhi (new)

Nidhi Bhatt I agree Donna...

message 230: by SourLemons (new)

SourLemons I don't get why people are saying Tris can win. I mean, I love her bravery and she is like my role model. But are you guys forgetting that being divergent is being A REGULAR PERSON? Without a gun in her hands, Tris can't really stand a chance against anyone that is not in her story...

message 231: by Donna (new)

Donna It seems this has turned into a popularity contest instead of logically who would be most likely, all things taken into account, would win a battle. I have given my two cents and it hasn't changed.

Larissa I found Celaena Sardothien a surprising choice...based on she planned her last assignment in The Assassin and the Empire...she probably improved in the trilogy.

message 235: by Donna (new)

Donna She doesn't need to be good at combat. She has brilliance, quickness and all encompassing magic on her side.

message 236: by Ellie (last edited Jun 25, 2015 01:25PM) (new)

Ellie I was thinking about this in terms of their greatest strengths and weapons.. (Terms: the opponents are in the same field facing each other, using only their trademark weapons. They fight to defeat, but not to kill.)
Hermione: She has her wand, but I've always had it in my mind that wands were only ethical in a fight during a wizard's duel, and I don't think Hermione would break those ethics.
Katniss: Her trademark weapon is the bow and arrow, right? That's okay from afar, but not ideal for a close fight.
Tris Prior: She started her training too late. And even if she was supposedly bright, I don't think she is smarter or better than Hermione or Katniss. (I only read the first book)
Katsa: I read this book a long time ago and don't really remember it. Her grace was survival, right? Would that really come in handy when the goal would only be to defeat, then?
Annabeth: She's terrific, but isn't her trademark weapon against monsters only? The blades would just swing through all the mortals in the field.
Rose: I didn't like the book. Doesn't count.
An army of Bellas: everyone pretty much hates her, but she has the strength of a vampire... But her fear of spilling blood and going crazy would prevent her from fighting.
Ellie: Heh. Even if she has my name, she can't fight. Period.
Fire: Don't remember it.
Sophronia: I feel like her skills are too much subterfuge and mindful-of-the-time-and-place, so though I do think she is a fighter, she might not last as long in one on one fight against these particular opponents.
Celaena Sardothien: She is a trained assassin since a young age. She has no problem killing or fighting. She has magic, to be used if needs must (or if she is paired against Hemione). She is the perfect candidate to send in a one on one field fight. Of course I voted for her.
All the others, I've never read the books for.

message 238: by Donna (new)

Donna I think if they are put up against each other they will all use their own special weapons, skills and abilities. So why would Hermione not be allowed to use her magic? Why would she not? It makes no sense, and she certainly does not follow the rules of the school or political system saying she cant use her magic against muggles. She would use what she has. Just like everyone else. Also Bella, no matter what you think of her could probably take them all, except Hermione. She is a powerful vampire. Not only could she put up protection against whatever comes at her, she is fast and strong. She cannot be so easily dismissed.

Erma Talamante Ellie wrote: "I was thinking about this in terms of their greatest strengths and weapons. [...]All the others, I've never read the books for. "

I can recommend The Song of the Lioness Quartet. Alanna may not be one of the most popular here, but she has mad skills. *And* it's a good read.

message 240: by Megan (new)

Megan Cassandra wrote: "Who is Annabeth? So many people seem to talk of her as a contender - I'm sticking with Celaena then Alanna. But what's Annabeth like?"

(Spoiler alert)She's probably smarter than Hermione (in her own area of expertise) and if there was no magic allowed she'd probably win. (I have only read like 3 of these books so Idk about most of them but Annabeth was practically born to kill monster bigger and stronger than her, plus she has been training ever since she was seven and even before she had reached the training place she killed monsters with hammers. And she was seven. (Random comment, she has a better reason to fear spiders than Ron, she was fricken mobbed by spiders at night and they would bite her and cover her with cobwebs.)

message 241: by Donna (last edited Jul 01, 2015 09:30PM) (new)

Donna Ok, I really know nothing of Annabeth, but smarter than Hermione in her own area of expertise? Really? Who is smarter than Hermione in her area of expertise? Gandalf? Oh yeah, he died. Harry? He did a lot of what he did with her help and since we are talking females only, Hermione is the top wizard in her field. And wizardry sort of trumps all those other attributes of all those other females with their special fighting skills and swords or whatever. Ive heard of nothing that can beat the Wizard Hermione.

I think that the comment might have meant that Annabeth is the best in Annabeth's area of expertise... well, I think so. I didn't write the comment :)

I agree Hermione is supposed to be the best witch in her time. But I think we've gone over all our arguments for why Hermione is/isn't better than Celaena or Alanna or anyone, so I'm just gonna say I still don't think she'd win, but I respect your opinions and we're just going round in circles now!

Thanks poll creator for a great discussion topic :)

Uhm, I think you missed the part where he didn't actually die. *SPOILER FOLLOWS* Gandalf is a Maia, and is Damn near immortal. That's why he came back. His kind are not human - then are a much older race than Man. If you want to read more on this, I highly recommend The Silmarillion.

But the talky thing seems to be a recurring pattern with most of the other heroines. It'd probably lead to lots of team making I reckon, and then betrayal because loads of these girls are super competitive. (I'm still saying it would be for defeat not death).
