"Lifton is (he's still alive; I just checked) a clinical psychologist. The title is the only time he uses the word 'survivors'--elsewhere he uses 'hibakusha'. While mainly he's concerned with psychological consequences, he also deals with the physical affects of the pika."

"The hibakusha were mostly not seen by medical professionals immediately. Over 70% of the doctors and 90% of the nurses were killed instantly. The few medical survivors were kept so busy treating burns and removing shards of glass with virtually no equipment for days. This book deals with that period, but it's mostly about studies from later years."

"Whether Helen would be able to be cured today is doubtful. I live in a city with many deaf-blind people (they come here because there are facilities for them).

But it wasn't until her family consulted Dr Alexander Graham Bell (many people forget that he was very committed to working for the deaf) that they accepted that she had to learn to live as a deaf-blind girl. And it was he who referred them to the Perkins School for The Blind."
