This is an impressive list! Here are three more.S3e13 (Dear Emily and Richard): Jess is reading the old Penguin Classics's edition of Dante's Inferno (translated by Mark Musa) in Luke's Diner when Dean comes in to order lunch for Tom's crew.
S3e20 (Say Goodnight, Gracie): In the bus scene at the end of the episode, after Jess puts away One Hundred Years of Solitude, he takes out Céline's Death on the Installment Plan.
S4e12-13 (A Family Matter & Nag Hammadi Is Where They Found the Gnostic Gospels): An old Signet Classics' edition of Melville's Billy Budd and Other Tales (with the Joyce Carol Oates intro) is in Jess's back pocket (upside down with back cover facing out) when he's walking back to his car in e12, and it's the book he's carrying around town in e13.
The only book I can't crack is s4e20-21 (Luke Can See Her Face & Last Week Fights, This Week Tights). Jess takes it out of his jacket and reads in the strip club in e20 until T.J. knocks it out of his hands, and near the end of e21, he puts it in his backpack as he's preparing to leave Stars Hollow.

Wow, thanks for the help, those were difficult! That strip club one has bothered me for ages. Hopefully someone will eventually recognize it!

Those are really hard, and the list above is really impressive too!
There's one more that I know of - the book that he reads in s2e15 at the end, when Luke's coming in, is suppose to be Charles Bukowski's Notes of a Dirty Old Man.
But there's one really hard that I couldn't find yet (exept of the one in the strip club) - the yellow book in s3e7, that Jess is reading during the dance marathon. If one of you could help me it would be great!
El,The yellow book is an old edition of Thomas Mann's The Magic Mountain! Also, one more book to add to the list is Hunter Thompson's Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail '72, which is one of the books laying around Jess when he's sitting on his inflatable mattress, smoking, and shuffling cards in S2e05, "Nick & Nora/Sid & Nancy."
The Bukowski definitely looks like the right book! Though am I going crazy or from the way he's holding it, is the cover on the wrong side of the book??

Thank you so much! That really helped me!
I just remembered another book - the book that Jess is reading in LA when he's coming to visit his father (s3e21, Here comes the son): It's Ask the Dust by John Fante.
I looked again on the book from the strip club and I'm pretty sure it's some sort of edition of The Scarlet Letter.
Amanda wrote: "The Bukowski definitely looks like the right book! Though am I going crazy or from the way he's holding it, is the cover on the wrong side of the book??"Ha! I never noticed that, but you're right! It definitely looks like he's holding it upside down.

I've looked through all the paperback covers of The Scarlet Letter on Goodreads (which has been a great resource for tracking down the older editions of some of these books), but I wasn't able to find a match.
Had no clue about the Fante book, so thanks for that!
Thank you so much for your lists, I love browsing them while I watch the respective episodes, and when I'm on a book-buying kick! Great job!For the Bukowski book at the end of 2x15 he's not holding it backwards, on the back cover Bukowski's name is on the fore-edge:

I've been looking everywhere to find the strip club book it's driving me crazy! Hopefully someone will recognize it and put me out of my misery!

Ahh, different edition! Of course.
Was actually discussing the strip club book with some coworkers last night (one used to work at a bookstore with an extensive used section), and they suggested posting the screenshots to Reddit to see if anyone there recognizes it...

That's a good idea! I saw someone that posted the screenshots on Twitter, but they didn't get any responses, maybe Reddit would work better though!

Sister Carrie
I think it's the Barnes & Noble Classics edition of Sister Carrie.

It's very similiar, but unfortunately it's not that... You can see also by the back cover that it's not the same book.
BTW Amanda - why did you add Rosemary's Baby to the list? At what episode Jess reads it?

Hi El, it must be that someone else added it to the list. Unfortunately lists are not locked and anyone can add something to it. The list of my votes is the 'official' list as far as what Jess reads or mentions.

Oh that's annoying, I didn't know you can add a book to a list that isn't yours...
I thought maybe you finally discovered the strip club's mystery book 😅
Oh wow, great list! I found so many here I had doubts about. I was wondering if anybody would know which book he is holding on episode 15 season 2, the green one, when Luke comes in to the room and he is sleeping
Also, I wondered if the book he is reading at the strip club could be a Jane Austen, perhaps? I don’t really know, but it’s a guess.

Seriously, congrats for the hard word collecting all the books with the references in the show. Forever grateful ;)
