I have no training in the field, but am just a curious person who wants to avoid the overly simplistic bestsellers. Does anyone have any *very best* recommendations for me? Also, I'm thinking I should probably choose among the newest books, do you agree?

'Dataclysm' is the place to start! It is really interesting and gives insight into a fantastic data science case study. I think 'The Functional Art' is kind of industry specific, but also does a great job at explaining how and why we do this.
