I agree with Melynna. You dont have to believe the Bible or the Koran or the Book of Mormon, but it helps to be familiar with what these books contain. The Bible is referenced or its tenets used in so many books of Western thought, that not having a knowledge of it means you miss out on the depth of many other works.

Absolutely true...

Janet Hawn I suggest adding Native Son by Richard Wright. Also Nickel Mountain by John Gardner and How Green Is My Valley by Llewellyn.

Val Fahrenheit 451 is listed twice...

I've said it before but I'll say it again: Due to the really huge number of titles on this Listopia, it is no longer possible for a librarian to use the 'check for duplicates' function as it doesn't work anymore, which is why there are duplicates on this list.

Trust this explanation is of help.

Yeah the book is way better than the movie, but NOTE: both are still rubbish.

I'm pretty sure that's old enough to be in the public domain, so you can download it for free.

If you can understand the popularity of reality tv, then you can understand the popularity of this book series.
I read 3 out of the 4 books years ago. I really feel as though I was waiting for something to happen, something to help me understand the phenomena, the popularity.
The books read like one giant rising action and then the climax is so unsatisfying, I moved onto the next book. The 2nd book shows promise in character (Bella's) development and logical story progression but then, again, left me unsatisfied. Hope drove me to the 3rd book. I realized that I wasn't going to get what I normally get out of series with this one so I didn't read the last book. I don't feel as though I am missing something so that let me know it was a waste of time in the 1st place.

Thepaynes3 Love this list - would add The Book of the Dun Cow and A Confederacy of Dunces :)

Sandy Long The Bible and The Book OF Mormon are two completely unrelated books.

Christine Jeffords Sandy wrote: "The Bible and The Book OF Mormon are two completely unrelated books."

Not really. The BoM tells about the post-crucifixion visit of Jesus to the "Lamanites," who later became (supposedly) the American Indians. It's really like a Third Testament.

BookLovingLady (deceased Jan. 25, 2023...) @KK
Neither of the two books mentioned by 'David' (who is D.L.Hale, the author) are on this Listopia.

@David
Just to let you know I've flagged your comments, as a Listopia is not meant for self-promotion, nor is its comments section.

D.L. Hale I have apologized and deleted those items requested. I wish you a happy day. By the way I noticed you were reading Don Quiote of La Mancha. I read it and enjoyed it very much.

Thanks for removing them.

message 722: by Greg (last edited Oct 20, 2016 07:27AM) (new)

Greg I've read 49 of the top 100. And I suppose one should read truly awful books like "Tom Sawyer" so that the really good books, like "To Kill a Mockingbird" or "Frankenstein" or "Lolita", shine even brighter.

Try a used bookshop or secondhand store."

India, Debbie, an annotated version was recently published and can probably be found at most libraries.

I concur. I read the Twilight series in its entirety in what I can only describe as a fit of temporary insanity. I suppose I was trying to understand what people were so infatuated with. I think my life would have turned out just as OK if I'd taken your approach.

message 730: by Frank (new)

Frank I'm not entirely convinced that garbage like Hunger Games & Twilight should be on here. They might be fun reads, but I'm not sure they deserve to be on the same list as great literature.

message 731: by Kairia (new)

Kairia I understand the librarians may not be able to easily find duplicates but since Fahrenheit 451 has two entries on the front page, they should easily be able to remove them now that the comments have pointed out exactly where they're located on the list.

The problem with removing duplicates by hand is that the votes for the removed title will not be combined with the votes for the remaining title. If one lets the system check for duplicates however, votes will be combined... And as there are quite a number of votes for both books, it would be a shame to remove a title by hand (but that's just my opinion).

Goodreads is working on the problem of the duplicate check; it has been reported to them by the librarians several times, but it seems to be a hard problem to solve.

message 738: by Aliya (new)

Aliya Faera wrote: "I skimmed through this list and there are some very horribly written books on it. Like Twilight and the Bible for instance."

Although perhaps the Bible may not be written to your literary tastes now days I urge you to remember that the Bible is not exactly a book as much as a record of true happenings. This may be why a reader may find it bland. But to call the Bible horribly written sounds to me like you are not only ignorant of what good literature is, but also strongly opinionated and uncaring of what others think. I do not mean to seem degrading in any way however I just wish you to understand that your opinion is not the only one that matters. And as for me I am just expressing how I disagree with your statement. The same could be said for twilight however my opinions on that series are best left unsaid.(:

Keith CARTER If you love fantasy please, please try Jesse Bullington, particularly The Sad Tale Of The Brothers Grossbart. It is one of my favourite ever reads. It is dark, brutal and brilliant.

message 750: by Kevin (new)

Kevin Bradshaw 90 % (or more) of the books on this list are complete shite. Children's books, however much you liked them when you were 11, are not must reads. Maybe for children, but not full grown adults.
