Bodhi Oh my goodness gracious jellyfish! A whole small town stands behind To Kill a Mockingbird and votes for it. Winner by a long shot. Almost SEVENTEEN THOUSAND people. Must be some sort of conspiracy. How many of those were "forced" to read it?!? Huh? Huh?

Very true Vincent. I wouldn't necessarily suggest the Bible as a Book of History. For many it is the "Word of God", for others it is a spiritual book or even mythology and a book of wisdom. (Job, Ecclesiastes, Proverbs, etc) and much can be gleaned from it that make it a classic work of literature as well and I find it annoying that some people dismiss it out of hand because of they have an issue with the Judeo-Christian traditions that base their Religions on it. I have actually read many "scriptures" including Ramayana, Bhagavad Gita, and other Zen, Tibetan, Hindu, books as well as mythologies and I would never dismiss them out of hand as being worthless whether I choose to follow the Religion and traditions it represents or not. :). I've gotten a lot out of them all. I know I am preaching to the choir.

message 610: by Sennett (last edited Jun 19, 2015 08:28AM) (new)

Sennett Why are there mostly classics on this list? It's not like old books are more relevant or new books can't be as lifechanging to someone. (Yes, I take books way too serious.) The writers of our past don't have to be better than our current collection of talented authors. And the 'new' books of the present are the classics of the future. For example, today's John Green is tommorow's Shake Speare. And I believe modern literature can apply very well to the current situation on our earth. In the 18th century, no one worried about climate change, but now it's a very relevant theme.
Side note: Yes, you're free to vote your opinion, but respect religions when you discuss their books (in this case the Bible). Also, I thought this was supposed to be a place to discuss literature, not religion.

message 611: by Christine (new)

Christine Jeffords "Why are there mostly classics on this list?"

Because classics, by definition, are those books which have stood the test of time. They've proved their worth, or been acknowledged as being more or less universally relevant. Certainly there may be dozens of future classics in print today, but they need time to "show their legs" before they reach that point.

message 612: by Mario (new)

Mario Pinot The Bible has any interesting stories esp. SOng of Songs, there are some books onGutenberg for free download, also the Strand bookstore in NYC has second hand books for sale. So much fun to read, just finished History of Pelopenessian sic. Thank you.

message 613: by Gloria (new)

Gloria I'm Christian, but I think religious/holy/sacred texts should have been left off of the list.

I also found the entire list to be suited to a very restricted Anglo-Saxon, (heterosexual, male) Protestant and/or Eurocentric readership. I saw one Maya Angelou and Alice Walker, but there are so many other fabulous books by non-White and non-Western authors that would still appeal to a broad audience. Chinua Achebe, Nelson Mandela (specifically Long Walk To Freedom), Baratunde R. Thurston, Chimanda Ngozi Adichie, Ayaan Hirsi Ali, NoViolet Bulawayo to name but a few...

message 615: by Judy (new)

Judy Legh Loved The Name of the Rose, thanks for reminding me about it......

message 616: by Catherine (new)

Catherine there's some really dodgy choices on this list - not what i'd call classics

message 617: by Emmaline (new)

Emmaline I have not gotten around to reading Return of The King, but I have seen the movie (like) 3 or 4 times. Nancy Drew books should be on the list. Or at least some type of mystery books.

I tried checking for duplicates a while ago, and again just now, but I keep getting the message 'request took too long'. This never happens with other Listopia's when I check for duplicates. I guess maybe there are just too many books here... Maybe another librarian will have better luck.

message 633: by TheLastBhramhin (new)

TheLastBhramhin 3 books you all should read:
1) A LONELY VOICE
2) DRINK FROM MY CALABASH
3) A GARDEN OF HAPPINESS
By the way these are all poetry.
Thanks

BookLovingLady (deceased Jan. 25, 2023...) Debbie wrote: "i dnot think you can get a copy of uncle toms cabin any more"

I just realized something.... You might not be a native speaker of English and as such rather read a translation (I can't check, because your profile is set to private). So you might be right when you say that Uncle Tom's Cabin doesn't seem to be available anymore...

I know the book is still available in a Dutch translation though, to name just one other language than English :-)

If you feel so strongly about these books, I'm assuming you have voted for them/added them?

message 636: by locrian (new)

locrian Its a book id like to read myself, however, who put les mis on a list of books everyone should read list and do they have any conception of how FREAKING long it is? like, thats a big commitment of life to put away for everyone when they could just see the musical/movie and get the main point of the matter

message 637: by Emma (new)

Emma This is list is absolutely amazing and I'm so glad I found it.

Just one question. WHY IS THERE TWILIGHT HERE? IT'S NOT A BOOK THAT EVERYONE SHOULD READ AT LEAST ONCE. Not to be rude, but Twilight's one of the worst books I've ever read. It shouldn't exist.

message 638: by Amanda (new)

Amanda Debbie wrote: "i dnot think you can get a copy of uncle toms cabin any more"

I got a free download of it for Kindle

message 639: by Lawrence (new)

Lawrence Roberts I have read twilight,Being the only paperback/non-science book I a remember reading properly I can say I enjoyed it.

This gives me great anticipation to read much, much more, as the general impression I got from the comments doesn't match up with feels toward it.

IF anyone has a recommendation from this list to start with id love hear from you.

Even the translated edition is still published here in the Netherlands and is available at local libraries.

By the way, I don't think I've ever seen so many responses to one single, and very simple, remark... (and none of us even know in which country Debbie is located, as her profile data is set to 'private')

message 643: by Brian (new)

Brian Brousseau IF someone spent their time reading this list, they wouldn't have time to read anything else in their life.

Sharon LOL, Brian

message 645: by John (last edited Oct 29, 2015 09:39AM) (new)

John Great list, and I realize that there are only 100 slots, however, I really believe that Edith Wharton should be represented on this list. I'm reading her "Wharton, collected stories 1891-1910" presently. Her writing is satirical, sarcastic, addictive. She has you hooked by the first couple of pages! Reading one of her ghost stories the other night, she had the hair standing up on the back of my arm, reminiscent of Hitchcock or even Rod Serling many years ago. "Age of Innocence" won a Pulitzer. Ethan Fromm was a master work of charcter development. IMHO.

message 646: by Sharon (new)

Sharon Wow, John. I could not get into Age of Innocence. Maybe I should try Wharton's ghost stories. More my style.

message 647: by Mark (new)

Mark Holmes As far as the bible goes, whether or not you accept its contents, it is unquestionably the most widely read/distributed/and influential collection of writings in history.

message 648: by Mark (new)

Mark Holmes As far as the bible goes, whether or not you accept its contents, it is unquestionably the most widely read/distributed/and influential collection of writings in history. So, to say it's a "bad book" is quite juvenile.

message 649: by Donna (new)

Donna Davis The assumptions inherent in this list give me pause. By "everyone", we must be speaking of those that speak English and are primarily members of first world nations. I couldn't even vote at all before assuming a fairly advanced literacy level. Just proposing such a list is idealistic, but maybe that's a good thing.

Super-librarians, I tried to check for duplicates; the log indicates nobody has been to this list since May, or else nothing had to be changed since then. I got error messages until I gave up. Just a heads-up.

I contacted GR a while ago about this. The error messages occur because the list is so very long. Nothing can be done about it, it seems.
