Actually, if you go back to the original language, what it says is "Thou shalt not DO MURDER" [emphasis mine]. I suspect that in those days, t..."
Or putting to death a criminal for murder, etc.

Very true Vincent. I wouldn't necessarily suggest the Bible as a Book of History. For many it is the "Word of God", for others it is a spiritual book or even mythology and a book of wisdom. (Job, Ecclesiastes, Proverbs, etc) and much can be gleaned from it that make it a classic work of literature as well and I find it annoying that some people dismiss it out of hand because of they have an issue with the Judeo-Christian traditions that base their Religions on it. I have actually read many "scriptures" including Ramayana, Bhagavad Gita, and other Zen, Tibetan, Hindu, books as well as mythologies and I would never dismiss them out of hand as being worthless whether I choose to follow the Religion and traditions it represents or not. :). I've gotten a lot out of them all. I know I am preaching to the choir.

Side note: Yes, you're free to vote your opinion, but respect religions when you discuss their books (in this case the Bible). Also, I thought this was supposed to be a place to discuss literature, not religion.

Because classics, by definition, are those books which have stood the test of time. They've proved their worth, or been acknowledged as being more or less universally relevant. Certainly there may be dozens of future classics in print today, but they need time to "show their legs" before they reach that point.

I also found the entire list to be suited to a very restricted Anglo-Saxon, (heterosexual, male) Protestant and/or Eurocentric readership. I saw one Maya Angelou and Alice Walker, but there are so many other fabulous books by non-White and non-Western authors that would still appeal to a broad audience. Chinua Achebe, Nelson Mandela (specifically Long Walk To Freedom), Baratunde R. Thurston, Chimanda Ngozi Adichie, Ayaan Hirsi Ali, NoViolet Bulawayo to name but a few...

Twilight somehow always makes every list. Along with The Book of Mor..."
Never read the Mormon or the King James bible before and Twilight is amazing.

it is on the banned book listyes

Oh and every book ever written offends someone in the world.....so your opinion, no matter how important it might seem.....probably wont matter in he long run.....unless thousands of others agree with you.....just saying...

Yes, there are at least 3 different editions for sale on amazon.com, plus all of our public libraries own copies.

Some of these books should be higher.

I tried checking for duplicates a while ago, and again just now, but I keep getting the message 'request took too long'. This never happens with other Listopia's when I check for duplicates. I guess maybe there are just too many books here... Maybe another librarian will have better luck.

You can I have one. http://www.flipkart.com/uncle-tom-s-c...

Maybe you've been looking in the wrong places, because, as mentioned by others as well, the book is widely available, in all price ranges. Try www.bookdepository.com for instance.

It looks like someone fixed it! My OCD was driving me crazy.

By the way these are all poetry.

I just realized something.... You might not be a native speaker of English and as such rather read a translation (I can't check, because your profile is set to private). So you might be right when you say that Uncle Tom's Cabin doesn't seem to be available anymore...
I know the book is still available in a Dutch translation though, to name just one other language than English :-)

If you feel so strongly about these books, I'm assuming you have voted for them/added them?

Just one question. WHY IS THERE TWILIGHT HERE? IT'S NOT A BOOK THAT EVERYONE SHOULD READ AT LEAST ONCE. Not to be rude, but Twilight's one of the worst books I've ever read. It shouldn't exist.

I got a free download of it for Kindle

This gives me great anticipation to read much, much more, as the general impression I got from the comments doesn't match up with feels toward it.
IF anyone has a recommendation from this list to start with id love hear from you.

depending on where you live, try running a catalog search at public library. It might not be available locally but you might be able to request the book through interlibrary loan.

Even the translated edition is still published here in the Netherlands and is available at local libraries.
By the way, I don't think I've ever seen so many responses to one single, and very simple, remark... (and none of us even know in which country Debbie is located, as her profile data is set to 'private')

Super-librarians, I tried to check for duplicates; the log indicates nobody has been to this list since May, or else nothing had to be changed since then. I got error messages until I gave up. Just a heads-up.

I contacted GR a while ago about this. The error messages occur because the list is so very long. Nothing can be done about it, it seems.
Excellent!!
