Dian Just read Who Owns America's Past? The Smithsonian and the Problem of History, by Robert C. Post. Amazingly well-written, and a wonderful history of the Smithsonian from an insider (he worked there for more than 20 years).

If nothing else, Twilight shows us that there are still people in the world who find spineless, drooling girls and neurotic, control-freakish boys appealing.

The Book of Mormon and the King James bible are mentioned separately on the list, as the are completely different works of writing.

message 457: by Jesslee (new)

Jesslee Hmm I have read around 50 of the top 100. But I think this is more of a populist list without a whole lot of meaning. I am sure one can live a perfectly fulfilling life without having to read the Harry Potter or Twilight series..

message 458: by Anil (new)

Anil Wonderful list!
Didn't really like Twilight myself.
Some of these books could be found on http://excellentselfhelp.com/

message 459: by Suzy (new)

Suzy A great list that reminds me of old friends that I treasure and new ones to meet. So many books, so little time!

Mark Some books inspire us with either stories or words that touch our heart because of our humanity.Furthermore, these books reveal truth to us and wake us up from misconceptions and lies. These books tend to feature an abundance of inspiring quotes. Here is an example of a book like that:
https://www.facebook.com/bookofcrossi...
http://www.yuehaixiao.net/2013/08/a-f...
The author Yuehai Xiao seems to be passionate about freedom and social justice, as demonstrated through his writing. Extending his passion for social justice from education to politics, in October 2012, Yuehai published this 318-page book titled "Crossing the Seas: A Diary of My Thoughts" in Bloomington, Indiana. The book is a collection of inspiring, awakening and profound thoughts Yuehai shared on Facebook, as well as his interactions with top political and business leaders, celebrities and scholars who became enthralled with his posts.
This is a book with awakening thoughts about ultimate freedom, equality, and world peace! Here is a stunning review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...Crossing the Seas: A Diary of My Thoughts

message 462: by Megan (new)

Megan Carmack Why does everyone care so much that Twilight is on this list? No, it is not a classic , but I still think people should read it based on how much attention it has recieved. Without reading a couple books you don't like, you can't be as well cultured as you would probably want to be. I mean, how do you expect to carry out an educated conversation with someone about how you hate Twilight if you haven't read it? Anyways, if you don't like a book on here, WHO CARES? This is a list that will help people find a new book to read, not a list that only puts up the books that individual people like- especially because people have extremely different tastes. This is based purely on opinions of which books are good, so there are no right or wrong answers. How about we let people feel included on this list and not instantly cast them out just because they enjoy books like Twilight?

message 463: by Human (new)

Human Neglect this list is fubared by people obviously voting for books they happen to like. that's not how this is supposed to work. fuckers.

message 464: by Frances (new)

Frances Sawaya I definitely would agree that any of the Twilight stuff should not be on this list. That series is like the VC Andrews junk or like the Academy Awards, i.e., gorgeous garbage.

message 465: by Joyce (new)

Joyce Purnell Knights of the Golden Circle
By DAVID C. KEEHN

I suggest this to be a great book about the Civil War politics.

message 468: by Ash (new)

Ash Coe A good list in my opinion apart from the inclusion of Twilight. Before anyone gets annoyed at me, I have read the whole series and found it reasonably enjoyable. However, I do not agree that it is a book everyone should read at least once. Perhaps a book teenage girls should read if they so choose? Is there a list for that??

message 469: by Sharon (new)

Sharon This list was created by personal opinion, nothing more. If you don't like Twilight or Fifty Shades, don't read them. If you believe the bible/quaran is God's/Allah's word, good for you. Whether you read for pleasure, social commentary, or inspiration, that's your choice. Let's stop telling people their choices are wrong or bad. They are just different. The list offers suggestions and reading them is NOT MANDATORY. Get over it.

message 472: by Hue (new)

Hue Baca "Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas", by Hunter S. Thompson was also rated in the top 25 book classics by other panels. And I agree - any citizen of the twentieth-century should have this book as required reading.

message 475: by Acorns (new)

Acorns I find it hilarious that Harry Potter comes before the Diary of Anne Frank. But at least To Kill a Mockingbird is where it should be. :)

message 476: by Ozma (new)

Ozma Bond great list, except of course the commercial ones.. surprised by the randomness of it all- who did this list? Must be a lifelong reader.

message 477: by Andrew (last edited Jan 30, 2014 09:22PM) (new)

Andrew Obrigewitsch Seriously how does Harry Potter encage thought? I'm surprised that Hunger Games is not number one, that was sarcasm.

I would think a list about books that encourage thought, would actually have deep profound books that well make in think about life. If Harry Potter and Hunger Games make you think hard about life, man, I don't even need to go further on that one.

message 478: by Andrew (new)

Andrew Obrigewitsch Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, is far superior to Uncle Tom's Cabin by the way. I highly recommend it.

Also Harry Potter is a series that has touched many lives including my own! I duly think it deserves to be on this list. I cant argue with Twilight being kicked off though!;)

I don't know, Andrew. HBS wasn't too subtle in getting some of her points across. Even so, Uncle Tom's Cabin was pretty moving, even for a geezer like myself. I might try your suggestion, tho.

As soon as someone tells me that "it behooves me" to read it, I immediately question its value. You are criticising someone's opinion because it doesn't mesh with yours. I think it behooves you to let others think for themselves.
