YES, YES, YES!"

Well, I don't live in the USA and I tried three times to read Atlas Shrugged. It is not for me.

Deb Omnivorous Reader I don't mean to offend anyone who likes the Ayn Rand book but I once read this one quote that cracked me up:

"There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old's life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs." - John Rogers

The book is always better than the movie!

I may not be particularly fond of this book/movie, but the general rule is that the book is always better. :)

BookLovingLady (deceased Jan. 25, 2023...) @*megan*
There have been instances where I didn't like the book and although I didn't like the movie either, I have to say it was marginally better :-)

You're right though; usually the book is better than the movie :-)

Nearly all are English language books, No Dostoyevsky no Thomas Mann no Cervantes no Virgil no Hermann Hesse no Balzac no Gabriel Marquez no Agatha Christie no Simenon no Moravia no Dante no Chaucer no Jane Austen no Brontes oh itsnot serious surely and the best (?) Dickens .Tale of two Cities. Homer the only non English language writer I can see at a glance; many of these titles are second rate if not third rate, the majority of them didactic, the majority of them successful as a result of clever marketing or modish opinions not owing to intrinsic overwhelming literary merit. Ha ha now I need to find out how to add titles to this list!:)

A lot may be said against The Bible, for example that it lauds mass murder, but it is a strange criticism to say that it is "horribly written". Are you able to read it in the original Hebrew? Or at least in the early Greek translations from the Hebrew? Most of us only have access to translations or in the case of the New Testament of translations of translations (Hebrew-Greek-English). That said, you mention the King James version-do you really find that "horribly written"? I had no idea there was an entire Mormon translation of The Bible.

I hear you. Rather than trying to add books to this immensely broken list, I would like to just stop seeing posts from it. However it is like a zombie thread and just keeps coming back, no matter what I do.

Is it still? In all of the US? Personally, I think it is ridiculous to ban a book ('Forbidden fruit' and all that), especially a book that was written so long ago.

I found it for sale at Barnes & Noble, among others, by the way...

message 924: by Marcus (new)

Marcus Kovesi I'm afraid I won't be reading 23,165 books at least once. I might get to a few thousand by the time I die. MIGHT.

message 929: by Mary Lewis (new)

Mary Lewis Its absolutely appalling that there are so many cruel people. It's a list where books are added. They're only suggestions people. There is absolutely no need to get into arguments about what book you think or don't think should be on there or whether you hate a book or not. Simple just don't read it and move on. Be kind people. Always be kind. Not everyone is going to agree on everything.

I agree. If you've read Wonder, You should know that being kind is important. It's mentioned throughout the book. This world won't move on without kindness.

Marcus Kovesi Ava wrote: "Lolita is on here? A book about pedophilia is something everyone should read at least once?"

Yes. It's one of the greatest novels of the 20th century. Just because a book is about a topic doesn't mean it endorses the topic.

5 books that were must reads. Really the fecking bible? Please.
Retitle this list" a bunch of random books, most of which are good but very few you cant live without."

Each to his own... No books 'encourage thought' for me but yet I added a lot of books which I think one should read. But like I said, 'each to his own'. 😉

message 935: by Bryan (new)

Bryan Mize I was delighted that I had read so many over my life time. Thanks for the list.

message 936: by Ike (new)

Ike This list is composed of books that received the most top ratings. I am surprised that people who like to read would be so confused that other people don't read the same thing they do.

One thread I find most interesting is people wondering why "The Book of Mormon" is on the list. Without reading it or its history, they go by what an uninformed person has told them. They say it is the "Mormon Bible" or the Mormon translation of the Bible. The Book of Mormon is actually not believed to be the Bible. The Bible is the history of the Jews before Christ (Old Testament) and the life and teachings of Christ (New Testament). The Book of Mormon is a history of people that left Jerusalem 600 BC who also believed that Christ would come, and that he did come for ALL the world. The Book of Mormon is ANOTHER testament of Jesus Christ, like the Bible. Whether or not you believe it is no skin off my nose, but to call it what it is.

I love to read and there have been some truly great writings in human history. I have read many of the books on this list and there are also other books that I wish were on the list, but I will continue to look for good books.

Jeff Mandy wrote: "Erg. Why does every one always feel the need to share how much they hate Twilight in these types of lists? All these books are so popular that there are tons of people who like and dont like them. ..."
Part of that is the publisher's fault. They marketed the book/series as a chick read and then with the movies it broke out of that mold/market and they were stuck.

I think you can get 'The Kid that Killed Santa and Ate the Easter Bunny" or is it the other way around, on Amazon.
