Interview with Kendall Ryan

Posted by Goodreads on September 17, 2018
Meet your new book boyfriend: the handsome, seductive, forever-teasing Cam. He's basically perfect, except for one small detail—he just took an oath to stop dating, hooking up, or falling in love.

But what's a little forbidden romance among friends? In Kendall Ryan's new book, Flirting with Forever, Cam struggles to keep his oath to one best friend while struggling with his feelings for his other best friend. The bestselling author of Hard to Love and Filthy Beautiful Lies gleefully weaves irresistible banter and electric chemistry into this tale of heartbreaking angst, hilarious miscommunications, and "accidental" one-night stands.

Ryan talked to us about which book boyfriend she's currently crushing on, why she loves surprising readers (even if it's with a dead body), and what sexy hardships she goes through as a romance author.

Goodreads: We adore a friends-to-lovers romance! How would you describe the bond between Cam, Jack, and Natalie at the start of Flirting with Forever?

Kendall Ryan: These characters are like the three amigos—best friends who grew up together, tease each other relentlessly, but are also always there for each other through life's tough spots.

GR: Let's talk sexy banter. How do you go about creating such clever, seductive dialogue?

KR: Ahh! I live for good banter!! That's one of my favorite things when I'm reading, and it can make or break the book. I definitely prefer dialogue to inner monologue, and so it's absolutely a huge goal for me to craft my stories with hot, snappy dialogue that sizzles.

Part of it is really just getting into character so that I can understand what they might think, say, and do in a situation. And then another part of it is me pulling from real-life examples. My husband provides good inspiration. At other times, I put myself in a character's shoes, push all the boundaries, and then think, "What would I want a man to whisper in my ear in that heated moment?"

I also subscribe to the notion that good dialogue should surprise the reader.

Instead of this:
Character A: "How are you?"
Character B: "Good. Thanks."

I'd rather have this:
Character B: "I'd be better if I didn't have a dead body in my trunk"—or something just totally surprising and contrary to what the reader might expect.

GR: Readers think Cam is "the ultimate book boyfriend." Who are some of your book boyfriends?

KR: Great question!! Sarina Bowen has created some very memorable leading men, most recently with Boy Toy. I heart Liam!

GR: Do you know everything that was going to happen in Flirting with Forever, or did you decide as you wrote?

KR: I'm a plotter—guilty as charged—so I know everything before I start writing.

GR: Hello, sexy couple! What goes into finding a hot book cover to match your books?

KR: Finding the right cover for a book is something myself and my team spend a lot of time on. Mostly it's just me or my publicist looking through photographs of beautiful men and couples. It's a real hardship!!

GR: Besides friends-to-lovers, what are some of your favorite romance tropes to read and write about?

KR: I love that tropes exist in romance. As a reader, I get to live a thousand different lives, and isn't that really why we read fiction to begin with? Some tried-and-true favorite tropes of mine are brother's best friend, fake date/fake marriage, and virgin and the billionaire.

GR: What romance books hooked you on the genre?

KR: I have to admit that I never read romance until later in life. And then I actually began with YA romance, so I was reading Jenny Han, Jennifer Echols, Veronica Roth, and Stephenie Myer. Then I read Abbi Glines and Jamie McGuire. They were like my gateway drug into adult romance, where I promptly binged myself on 1,000 other titles. Now romance is pretty much all I read, with some nonfiction titles thrown in for good measure.

GR: What are you currently reading?

KR: I've been binge-reading Elle Kennedy's Off Campus series. It's fantastic!!

GR: What new projects are you excited to get in front of readers?

KR: I am really excited about my first-ever sports romance books, Dear Jane and Finding Alexei, which are sweet and hot. Both are about strong, hunky pro football players and the ladies who put them in their place.

And then next year I have a series that will be incredibly fun and sexy about a male escort agency. The guys are hilariously confident, and there is so much swagger and sensuality. It's been a blast to write. The titles are Boyfriend for Hire and The Hookup Handbook.

Lisa Brouillard I love your books Kendall Ryan!! I also love the snappy, sassy banter. That makes a book way more enjoyable than inner dialogue. There are only so many different ways you can explain the same thing to yourself. It drives me bonkers and in books with that I skim...🤷‍♀️ Your books I read every word so I don’t miss a thing!!! Keep on writing and making us happy!!!😁😁😁
