4.5 stars. A sweet and wonderful book. Linus Baker, a caseworker for DICOMY, stays at a secluded island orphanage for magical children, investigating it's circumstances. What he finds is much more than he expects. I was worried the story might be turn out overly sappy but it wasn't - just this side of it, though. Linus Baker steals the show but I also really liked the character Sal. The setting reminded a bit of the Harry Potter series, with the setting of magic and magical creatures and bureauc ...more

Just about everyone read this last year, but I finally got my hands on a copy from my library. To me, it was cheesy, sweet, funny, quirky, heartwarming, relatable, and incredibly predictable. I did like it better than Under the Whispering Door because the character progression felt more natural, but it was basically the same setup.

It has great messages about acceptance, diversity, found family, and home. But these messages are not subtle in the least, you have no choice but to get these!
