What a trip! Wow!
You pick up a book thinking, wow, what a fabulous cover. Then you crack the book open and get 75-100 pages in and think, I know where this is going... and then the book is like, oh, you have no clue, and then you're hooked. What a spine-chilling, creepy tome. Towards the end of which kind of made me want to live in a tent for a while, not going to lie. A perfect read for a chilly October weekend, just don't read it if you intend to sleep. ...more

Lots of purple prose, very little plot.
The first half was a 3⭐️ read due to the pacing.
The second half was closer to 4⭐️’s and took some paranormal and creepy turns.
So 3.5⭐️’s rounded up.
There were some interesting themes in this story that I may be reading into too much, but I highly enjoyed what I thought to be a commentary on British colonialism and feminism/women’s experiences within a patriarchal society.
I do wish the writing was as lush as the cover, but I have heard great things about a few of Moreno-Garcia’s other books and h ...more

It was kind of dragging at the beginning that I considered DNF but it got twisted and ready to explode toward the middle so I decided to give it a chance, it was an interesting twist and ending. It almost sounded though like there would be more stories based on this beginning
