I very much enjoyed this sinister and surreal gothic novel but I must admit it did unnerve me so that I checked the locks on my doors and windows. A story of mistrust, hidden secrets and misplaced family loyalties, everything a good horror novel should produce. "Mexican Gothic" is much like the book "The Haunting of Hill House" by Shirley Jackson, in that nothing is what it seems and the characters start to fracture. That took a really….weird twist. It started out as a spooky novel with a dark, gothic aesthetic, but then it took a really weird turn and became more of a gruesome, supernatural horror. It was still a good novel, but a little more graphic than I like. Interesting storyline, I was able to guess at least part of the twist, but, I certainly didn’t see it going in THAT direction. I would have given it 4 stars, but honestly it had some pretty gruesome scenes in it that I don’t want to be visualizing ...more

Wonderful, eerie, moody horror and suspense. It somehow takes me back to the best of Poe or Lovecraft while, at the same time, not being much like either. This author uses some strange alchemy of words to invoke a palpable sense of dread as the reader shares with our heroine the inability to trust what they see, hear, or feel .

No spoilers here, but I have to say that the best thing about this book is the main character.
It's about TIME I read a horror book... or a book in general... where the woman in it doesn't make stupid moves, stupid decision, or acts... stupid. She stands her ground and protects people. NICE!
