I very much enjoyed this sinister and surreal gothic novel but I must admit it did unnerve me so that I checked the locks on my doors and windows. A story of mistrust, hidden secrets and misplaced family loyalties, everything a good horror novel should produce. "Mexican Gothic" is much like the book "The Haunting of Hill House" by Shirley Jackson, in that nothing is what it seems and the characters start to fracture. Wonderful, eerie, moody horror and suspense. It somehow takes me back to the best of Poe or Lovecraft while, at the same time, not being much like either. This author uses some strange alchemy of words to invoke a palpable sense of dread as the reader shares with our heroine the inability to trust what they see, hear, or feel .

Noemí was a blast to follow on this creepy little adventure. I loved her snark and manipulations. From the opening scene I could tell who she was and what time period we were in simply by her killer attitude. The story wastes no time taking us to our gothic mansion setting, where nothing is as it seems. The creepy visions and unraveling mystery felt very Crimson Peak with some truly grotesque imagery and violence. Okay, I didn’t hate it, but for a book that beat out King’s It Bleeds, for Goodreads Horror Book of the Year, it is a let down. I kept waiting for it to get better, yet knowing that it had already set up the premise, and it was not going to live up to the hype. I’m not sorry I read it, and the cover is great! Just was expecting more.
