So, after a lot - a LOOOOOOT - of stewing over this book, I'm lowering this back down to two stars. I'm sorry?

This was going to be a two-star book for me, up until the last portion of the story. Although the writing wasn't really quite up to par for me, I enjoyed Magnus's and Lucia's perspectives, and Jonas and Cleo eventually grew on me in the last couple of chapters. I found some of the elements of this book to be quite frustrating (mostly Cleo and Jonas, the terrible decis ...more

Corrupt lands, bloody kings, and magic? Please sign me up!!
Honestly, when picking this up I totally judged the book by the cover! I went in with zero expectations and I ended up enjoying it.
It was a light enough read that I quickly filed away into my "to recommend pile". The book was easy to follow along with especially in terms of the rotating POVs and characters.
I read this book in between breaks or on my way to work, so I must apologize and say that I tended to forget some character names. ...more

I feel like I would have really liked this book like eight years ago. I think part of my issue is that I have read too much YA and it takes a lot to impress me or surprise me. But I think the bigger issue is that I felt like the author spoon-fed information to the reader.
We follow multiple perspectives over three different kingdoms who are at war. We have forbidden magic, forbidden romance, and lots of rebellious princess. I don't actually mind tropes, when they're done well. And this could hav ...more

I enjoyed this book a lot more than I thought I would. Honestly, a lot of the writing wasn't great. The dialogue was pretty clunky. The descriptions were sometimes repetitious. But the storytelling was very well done. There were tons of characters and she has them coming and going and backstabbing and falling in love, combining and recombining until she leaves you breathless. But it all comes together in the end. I loved the character of Magnus, dark, passionate but damaged. All of his scenes ran

Surprisingly, I really enjoyed it. I did not have a lot of time to read, but whenever I wasn't reading it, I wanted to stop everything and continue reading. Which is a great thing...
