Ready Player 1 (4.0) :-was a very interesting read. By far a submersive story that drew you right in. I mainly picked up this book because of the movie trailer. Hence I did not know the plot until picking up this book. But I'm a glad I got to read this before the movie came up.

The virtual reality aspects have always fascinated me. Not to the mention the reference to many, many ,many pop culture was astonishing. The level of research it must have taken the writer for the completetion of this boo ...more

I had fun reading about nerds talking out video game strategies and I would love to play a VR game that put me in a movie and gave me points for knowing the dialogue and doing vocal inflections!

I wouldn't mind having access to the OASIS but I'd never live there as most people in this novel seemed to have to. And it wasn't just that they were addicted to video games and a fake utopia, I enjoyed this book. It had some pure laugh out loud moments. There are many places that were just plain clever. I had fun reading about nerds talking out video game strategies and I would love to play a VR game that put me in a movie and gave me points for knowing the dialogue and doing vocal inflections!

I wouldn't mind having access to the OASIS but I'd never live there as most people in this novel seemed to have to. And it wasn't just that they were addicted to video games and a fake utopia, the real world had nothing much to offer anymore since humanity destroyed it. Jobs were online, vacations to nice destinations were online, and the saddest thing the poor were still discriminated against in a virtual world by being limited in where they could travel because it was possible to still not have money in a simulation. Black women passed as white men to make more profit and be taken seriously. The author does not forget to put more than fun stuff but hard, real world ties into the book.

My chief complaints and why it was so hard for me to get through this book years ago when I first attempted were the mass info dumps at the worst possible times. I lost interest before I even truly began the book the first time. Was inspired to read again by the movie, which I still like, I understand the changes they chose to make, and powered through the deluge of information in sections that probably could have moved ahead with a little less or things that could have come later. (And I think I got through them because I did the audio book this time. I love that Wil Wheaton reads it).

Another complaint is the fact that the characters seem to stand around and talk, talk, talk, and then realize oh crap, the competition is catching up. Of course they are, they want to win, they will chat with their friends after they pass you. This happens several times, it's frustrating and makes you think well, maybe this really isn't that important after all.

Last complaint, the main character's obsession with a girl who doesn't want him. She sees the business at hand and says let's focus. He thinks he can change her mind when it's obvious he won't. Move on, dude. His moping almost lost them the OASIS for the very reason she didn't want to get involved with him, she was right. And every time he'd get back to business, there'd have to be some pining section about Artemis. Oh woe as me... I'm not in hiding because I got a bunch of people murdered and can't show my real face or name anywhere because I'll get murdered too. I don't live in a world where I don't personally know any of my friends. I'm not on an epic quest that could end my world as I know it. Artemis won't say she loves me because she can focus on what's important right now! Waah!

But those things aside, fun read, complete brain candy. ...more
