Read this in Social Studies class in high school to illustrate the principles of Populism.

I believe one of my first author binges was L. Frank Baum—and what a binge. I was probably 7 or 8 years old and didn't realize that the scores of Oz books were not written by Baum himself. That being said, I had a discerning eye (don't all children?) and could tell they were not all of the same quality. Of course, of course, this one is the best and mostest wonderful.

The (Wonderful) Wizard of Oz is a cultural icon and fodder for all kinds of philosophical, political, social, and moral discussion

Hmm...so I don't recall so much decapitation in the cinematic musical version...

Frankly, I'm surprised I didn't enjoy The Wizard of Oz more. I find the world Baum creates to be very intriguing, but the characters leave me wanting...more. Or is that I want them to be different? Getting past the repetitive listing of who they are and where they are headed, everyone seems so obsessed with ruling over people. Also, multiple times something is deemed worthy of being loved because it is "so beautiful.

I bought this book at a little independent bookstore in Bardstown, Kentucky, because I really liked the bookstore and wanted to support it. I'm really not sure why I chose the Wizard of Oz, other than that I've never read it and it was cheap.

I really liked the book at the beginning, it was just simple and magical and took you off into another world. By the end I got kind of bored with the lack of complexity. I think it would be a fun book to read aloud to a child, but it doesn't go on my list o

Like Alica in Wonderland, Wizard of Oz also has a certain old charm that filled my heart with warmth, as if pulling back to my wonderful childhood. This kind of book made me realize that there will always be a certain part of me that won't grow old XD I love the characters, the adventures, the details (yellow brick lane, emerald spectacles, blue Munchkin, and many other adorable fantasies), and of course the twist :) It's classic, timeless, and memorable. ...more

I love this book! I grew up with this story, with the book and mostly the movie. We watched it many times. After a stressful week, this was the perfect way to escape into a comforting, familiar story. And Anne Hathaway's narration was just delightful! She was fabulous :) ...more
