Erica Hannickel is a nonfiction author and former professor of environmental history at Northland College (WI). She grew up in the foothills of the Sierra Nevadas in northern California gardening with her grandmothers. Now a Master Gardener, she takes full advantage of the short growing season in northern Wisconsin as an avid organic vegetable, herb, and flower gardener.

More to the point, she's a dedicated orchid freak, and loves visiting botanical gardens and orchid greenhouses all over the world. On the trip home, she packs the orchids she buys into every spare inch of her luggage. Clothes are often sacrificed for the cause.

In the basement of the U Iowa library, I decided to check out 19th century garden magazines to dream of warmer days--especially Andrew Jackson Downing's -The Horticulturist-. I quickly realized that magazine and many others spoke about grapes differently than other fruits. Grapes supposedly held the key to national expansion and empire, but in a "natural," beneficent way.(less)

Thanks. I do talk to my plants a bit--more like muttering, I guess, in that I'll say "oh, you need more light" and then move it, or try to coax it into bloom with praise (or sometimes threats, ha). I did go through a phase a long time ago of calling my paphiopedilums "little divas" (and far worse) before I had worked out their secrets (for me, that meant regular repotting, making sure to water thoroughly, and planting slightly below the level of the media). Happy growing!(less)

Traci Hey girl! As you can see, I tend to either love or hate a book, not many ratings in between. I was sitting at my desk last night trying to remember books I've read to add to my list. I'm now reading my first book on an e-reader. I'm pretty much opposed to them, but I thought I'd give it a try (plus it was a free download so that was a bonus).
