I really enjoyed this book by Stegner. The book is about Larry and Sally, two young adults who are married and move to a town where Larry has a job teaching at the local university. There, they meet Charity and Sid, two young adults who are married and move to a town where Sid had a job teaching at the local university. The four hit it off and become BFFs. The primary difference that exists between them as couples is that Larry and Sally have little money and Sid and Charity have a bunch of it.

I love Stegner's writing and can't wait to read more of his books. I don't know whom I would recommend them to, though. There is nothing really witty, startling or adventuresome about his writing; nothing (besides ordinary life) happens to his characters. Yet I love the way he writes about what is important about living - about friendship (the kind that lasts decades, forged between two sets of married couples), how to treat other people right without hectoring, overwhelming or condescending to

It was good, but nothing too terribly spectacular. I may have enjoyed it more in the summertime when I tend to enjoy "serious" books more thoroughly.

This novel was written some time ago before the electronic explosion. It takes place around the time of WWII, and deals with two families in academia. They are friends though clearly from different economic backgrounds. It is a novel of family dynamics in a much gentler time than today. Refreshing in a good sense.
