My first Roth read and I couldn't have been more pleasantly surprised. For an "American classic" written by a self-described liberal Jew, I found this strangely, profoundly conservative, borderline misogynist. It's about the death of one perfect, beautiful man his wife's American Dream, at the hands of their demented daughter and other women. Although I was annoyed by the first chapter at this tome to classic middle-American one-sided phallic love and nostalgia, Roth does have a way of seducing his reader at the level of the sentence. Great dialogue, great writing.
