This was great fun!!

I thought this would be stuffy and overly wordy, like so much Victorian literature is (yes, I'm looking at you, Wilkie Collins), but it's not at all. It's funny and fast-paced and feels so very modern.

This was published in 1887, and I was amused to see the text poke fun at conservative politicians and their hand wringing over foreigners and

I'd previously read The Hound of the Baskervilles (1902), but it was ten years ago. I can't even remember the basic plot, so I probably need to read it again in time. These don't necessarily need to be read in order, but my neuroticism wouldn't leave me alone otherwise. So, let the mysteries of Victorian London begin!

I really enjoyed my first Sherlock Holmes book. My only disappointment was that Holmes disappears for at least half the book, while Doyle gives the backstory of the motives behind the murders. Even so, Holmes is delightful every time he appears on the page, and the overall story is pretty good, too.

I'll definitely be reading more of Holmes and would recommend this one to any Holmes fan, since this book is where it all began.

N.B. The book is excellent on audio.

I was inspired by PBS Masterpiece Mystery! Sherlock. The first episode was so awesome that I had to pick up the original piece and read it for myself. I figured my first Sherlock story should be the first one ever. I can't believe it has taken me this long to read a Sherlock Holmes story. I really enjoyed it and it was short but I read it quickly. There is definitely more Holmes in my future. ...more

Surprisingly modern for at least the first half; however, last bits are a little too much narration.

Two stars for the story, three stars for the character of Sherlock Holmes. I like the modern day Sherlock Holmes stories better than the original.

Highly enjoyable---the beginning of Sherlock and Watson. Conan Doyle's mystery and prose both are excellent in this one. ...more
