Machado de Assis wrote a novel in the 19th century that reads as if it were written in the 20th century. Take that Dickens and Hugo! So Bras Cubas decided to write his memoirs after he died. Certainly an interesting premise. I found this book to be really amusing, particularly how he describes his childhood and the religion that he creates: Humanitism: "the principle of the things, the same man equally distributed in all men".
I liked the short quirky chapters (one near the end just had a title).
