What Members Thought

I read this a few years after it came out, and have remembered it as a book I enjoyed ever since. I completely enjoyed it again. I love how brave and tough and compassionate Snake is.

Given that this book won the Hugo and Nebula Awards (among numerous other awards) in 1978-1979 for best sci-fi novel of the year, it's surprising to learn that it's currently out of print (and has been so for more than a decade (?)) ... ...more

This was one of the first sci-fi books I ever read. My little paperback has been on my shelves for years, and I re-read it every few years. On this re-read I still found Snake to be a great character--a woman who knows who she is and loves what she does (healer). She is confident, kind, and smart. The seemingly post-apocalyptic world is fascinating--snakes used to fight illness, alien influences, people who have survived in very different ways . Really enjoyed this, wasn't expecting it to be as good as it was. Aside from the lead character being called "Snake", which I wasn't really a fan of, it was a great read. Slots in nicely with tales about a post-nuclear war future without it just resorting to Mad Max style tropes and violence so many do these days. The characters you genuinely feel for and these are well written.
