Classic scifi with some really cool concepts, but which also has some ... classic scifi elements.
I'm definitely glad I picked this one up, I'm still thinking about some of the implications and it really makes for a fun concept. What if an alien species left a bunch of ships that you could take to wherever they had the ships programmed? Sometimes this can be a good thing, sometimes what once was probably an interesting place ... is now a black hole. Only the brave can risk it all for potential ri ...more

Gateway is the first book in the Heechee saga. I read this a long time ago, and liked it at the time. This time around, I hated it. I don't know if it was because it was on audible vs reading, but the main character spends the whole time ruminating on the terrible experiences he went through, as a prospector on Gateway. The other part of the book, details his experiences as a prospector, but even then he's so self absorbed, you want to beat his head against the wall...

This was one of the first books that I really couldn't put down as a teenager. When I read it, there was a real thrill of what was on the other side of the trip. What was waiting to be discovered. It's one of the very few books that I've re-read more than 3 times.
