How do you describe The Hobbit?
"In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit."
"Chip the glasses and crack the plates!
Blunt the knives and bend the forks!
That's what Bilbo Baggins hates--"
Then he met some dwarves.
"Far over the misty mountains cold
To dungeons deep and caverns old
We must away ere break of day
To seek the pale enchanted gold."
And they met some elves.
"O! Where are you going
With beards all a-wagging?
No knowing, no knowing
What brings Mister Baggins
And Balin and Dwalin

While the majority of this story was charming, some of it I found a bit on the dull side. I hope the Tolkien loyalists down send me to Mordor without a paddle, but I found the section of the riddles with Gollum to be drawn out and I found myself daydreaming through some of the narration.
On the other hand, I really enjoy Tolkien's clever turn of phrase and wonderful imagination. ...more
