Let's start with the good things:
Andy Weir obviously knows what he's talking about. He clearly put a LOT of effort into making this as believable as possible, and I enjoyed all the science (at least most of it) in the book.
Also, Mark Watney is a very likeable character and you can't help but instantly root for him. I also loved his sense of humour and his unwavering spirit.

This was fun. I enjoyed the humour and the author clearly loves science of many disciplines. I just wish I hadn't already seen the film because overall it was very similar.

This is hard science fiction. There is a lot of scientific terms, math & chemistry.
I don't normally go for something like this but I gave it shot because I was trying to get out of my comfort zone of fantasy and paranormal.
~This isn't Armageddon in book form.
I am not going to lie, the math and technical aspect was rough for me and slowed my reading. I am no idiot by a longshot but it can tend to read like a word problem in some spots.

A fun, light but intense read. Mark is a great character to follow, as was the rest of the crew. Characterization outside of "snarky and/or curses a lot" was pretty light aside from Mark who got a bit more, but that's all right, he's the main draw anyway.
