Well, I really loved this book. Not since I've read Jaqueline Carey's Kushiel series have I been as enamored, in fact they are very evocative of each other, these series.

I had no expectations of this book, in fact I've had an ARC copy by my bed for like a year and a half, and for some reason couldn't get myself to pick it up. I think the cover implies a more epic fantasy feel than it is, really it would appeal to most female-driven urban fantasy fans, but again, i guess it's smart not to slap a

Two stars for an NK Jemisin's novel? Yes, your eyes do not deceive you.

Where should I begin? Let's start with the awful romance that made me threw two stars into the abyss. It is like reading a Harlequin novel where you got this plain girl who somehow attracted this dark, super hot, alluring god that was, yes, mysterious and evil but obviously totally misunderstood and the girl was feeling tingly inside (or was it outside?) everytime he was near her because just speaking his name she got wet.

Very enjoyable read but a bit unsatisfying.

The Good
----------------------
Yeine's voice: she is a great character to follow. She's tough, smart, and courageous. Her romp through the insanity of Sky is quite good.

Challenge of the Heart: The story is primarily about the emotional strain placed on Yeine in an impossible situation. This is well done.

Writing: Although many might be put off by it, I enjoyed the choppy, broken nature of the narrative with its digressions and occasional rambling.

Very enjoyable story but I wasn't blown away with it. I was impressed with how well the author was able to tell the story in first-person but I have a few issues with how fast the relationships develop, as the whole story takes place over a few days. Not sure if I bought the amount of desire/love/hatred in that short of time.
The other problem is the gods, beings with ultimate power are hard to identify with. People able to command gods are also not easy to identify with. As for sex with gods...

There are a few things that caught my attention which I liked about this book. 1) it is a fantasy written from the perspective of a strong female character which; though not unheard of; is quite rare in this genre. 2) the story may be about Gods, and fantastical places, but their social interactions, politics, family issues, wars with other lands keep the story realistic enough that a reader doesn't need to be a fantasy reader to find the book drawing them in. 3) I just liked the characters. It doesn't bode well for a review when you're more interested in reading your current book than writing up a review. So this will be short.

I didn't dislike this book but it certainly didn't grab me. It was nice to have a different type of protagonist than we're typically used to in fantasy novels. While the book was in the first-person, I didn't think that the voice was all that interesting. Frankly, I found Yeine kind of boring. I also thought that the beginnings of each chapter were trying way
