What Members Thought

George R. R. Martin would like you to know that he bought a dictionary of archaic Scottish English in the six years it took to write this book, and he learned a lot of cool words from it.
For example, did you know “leal” was used instead of loyal? It’s true! Also, you can use “neeps” to refer to rutabaga or turnips. And we already know that the word “teats” is awesome, of course, but let’s not forget the marvelous utility of the word “cunt!” It can refer to a woman’s body part, the woman herself, ...more

This entry to the series felt like it had a lot more 'payoff' than the previous book, yet continues to be less and less focused.
It seems as if every release is adding 15 new POV characters, and though each is incredibly well drawn and interesting, it now feels like reading 6 books at once. The good news is, if anyone can pull off wrapping all this up in a satisfying way, it's GRRM.

Now I'm caught up and have to wait Bob knows how long before getting to read more of these books. I loved this one too, although there were a few moments I felt angry at the way some of the female characters were being treated. But it is how the world is, I guess. I would deduct one star purely for George R.R. Martin murdering people I like, if not for the fact that it wouldn't be fair and books are more enjoyable when there is a real sense of danger.
Also, there were dragons.

ADwD is MUCH better on a second read. I originally thought the plot wasn't very engaging, but it certainly is--at least in this first book. Even the Dany and Tyrion chapters are exciting. Perhaps it's because there's not much Quentyn yet, which I thought dragged the story down. (That'll be in the second aDwD book.) Plus, a second read is letting me get immersed in the details a lot more (I think I was much more concerned with plot the first go round). Quite a good book.

This book dragged on a bit, but at the end it gets really exciting. Can't wait for the sixth book.
