I'll start off by saying that I adore Martin's writing and this series in particular. Because of this, I think any book in the Song of Ice and Fire series will get a high rating from me.

That said, I was a bit disappointed in this one. I enjoyed reading it, but after years of waiting, I expected a little bit more. It feels like not a whole lot happened to progress the plot. And then there were new character viewpoints that I couldn't have cared less about, and wondered if we really needed new vi

From any other author, this would be a 5 star book, but GRRM is failing to make the superlative standard he set in the first three books. This one is meandering all over the place, while adding to the ever expanding roster of characters, putting strain on one's ability to remember and care about a certain number of people. He is also afflicted with Jordan's disease of over describing the nature, dresses and food. It was great to see some of the popular characters return after their absence in th ...more

Now I'm caught up and have to wait Bob knows how long before getting to read more of these books. I loved this one too, although there were a few moments I felt angry at the way some of the female characters were being treated. But it is how the world is, I guess. I would deduct one star purely for George R.R. Martin murdering people I like, if not for the fact that it wouldn't be fair and books are more enjoyable when there is a real sense of danger.

Also, there were dragons.

Dragons.

A massive, massive story draws one step closer to the end, if there really is such a thing in the world of "Ice and Fire." Much and more going on here, with the major players getting nearer each other and the big bang that's going to happen... but nobody seems to be in a terrible hurry here. At least two more books I've heard?

Interesting to see Daenerys struggle with who she is, or who she is supposed to be. Frustating to watch Stannis thickheadedly stick with who he thinks he is, no matter wha

There are some great moments in this book, but they are pretty far between. The book has very little forward momentum. I will say this though, it feels like the series is set up for an quite a return in the next book.

He's getting way too cute with killing off characters. If you are going to off a character 5 books in, give me some reason to believe that the book and a half dedicated to the character actually was time invested in the story. ...more
