Well, I really loved this book. Not since I've read Jaqueline Carey's Kushiel series have I been as enamored, in fact they are very evocative of each other, these series.

I had no expectations of this book, in fact I've had an ARC copy by my bed for like a year and a half, and for some reason couldn't get myself to pick it up. I think the cover implies a more epic fantasy feel than it is, really it would appeal to most female-driven urban fantasy fans, but again, i guess it's smart not to slap a

Two stars for an NK Jemisin's novel? Yes, your eyes do not deceive you.

Where should I begin? Let's start with the awful romance that made me threw two stars into the abyss. It is like reading a Harlequin novel where you got this plain girl who somehow attracted this dark, super hot, alluring god that was, yes, mysterious and evil but obviously totally misunderstood and the girl was feeling tingly inside (or was it outside?) everytime he was near her because just speaking his name she got wet.

The writing was great and the storyline was good, but for a personal reason I could not really get into this novel. I found myself staying away from it instead of reading. It came to me when I was describing it to another friend. This novel describes a severely dysfunctional family in a fantasy setting. That was the drawback for me. I have CPTSD and it started to trigger me a few times.

I was really prepared to love this book. First of all it (and the whole series it begins) received so much love from readers and critics alike. Just check out the award nominations! Second, I used to be a religious listener of the Podcastle Podcast which Jemisin was often associated with; i.e. they featured her short stories and she even narrated a couple I think. When this novel came out, the podcast featured the book trailer etc… Basically I was aware of her as an author and wished her well.

A fantasy where lot of things have been done differently, but this is a proof that doing things differently doesn't always mean doing things better, though the uniqueness of the premise landed it with both Hugo and Nebula nomination, though I am glad that it won none. While it has an interesting world drawing from Hindu/Egyptian myths, the characters are mostly obnoxious, sketchily drawn and hard to care about. The good thing about the book is that it can be read as a stand alone novel (no cliff ...more

I quite liked this series. It was fast, fun fantasy set in an interesting world with some neat original ideas.
