What Members Thought

I enjoyed the world Jemisin created and the characters. I think she nailed it with the gods and their personalities. I have to admit that I did not see the end coming, though in hindsight, perhaps I should have guessed at it.
You really feel for Yeine; she's very young, despite being ennu of her people, and there's this very poignant section where she's thinking about her life and how she wants to LIVE. Not just exist, but that she hasn't grasped anything for herself yet.

Very enjoyable read but a bit unsatisfying.
The Good
----------------------
Yeine's voice: she is a great character to follow. She's tough, smart, and courageous. Her romp through the insanity of Sky is quite good.
Challenge of the Heart: The story is primarily about the emotional strain placed on Yeine in an impossible situation. This is well done.
Writing: Although many might be put off by it, I enjoyed the choppy, broken nature of the narrative with its digressions and occasional rambling.

Yeine is the kind of character I really like - strong, but not infallible; smart, though not immune to misdirection and lies; and human enough to make wonderfully horrible mistakes.
Though I'd heard of this book, it didn't really catch my attention when it came out a few years ago. I'm glad it has been chosen for January 2014's Vaginal Fantasy Hangout read because I don't know if I would have read it, otherwise. And that would have been a shame.

I love this book like cake. I said, while I was reading it, that it read like fanfiction and I meant that in the most positive way possible. It's got all the good stuff I like about fanfic without the niggling details that bug me so much about actual fanfic. Seriously, I adored this book.

At first this book was slow going for me. It is pretty bleak. But the world of the book is amazing and layered, the idea of captive gods was intriguing and I loved the strong heroine of color. In the end, I've been thinking about this book ever since I put it down and I look forward to reading the sequel.
