I really really enjoyed it. One of my favorite books so far from this year. I went into this not really knowing what to expect and I kept getting surprised. It didnt go in the direction I thought it would go in at all. I loved the mystery and the intrigue and the book kept me guessing at all times (though there were a few things that I figured out). Een boek van 540 p. moet wel héél goed zijn, wil het mijn aandacht kunnen vasthouden, en dat was dit dus niet, al Fermíns bloemrijke uitspraken ten spijt.

I wanted to like this book more than I did. I wish the mystery was more of a mystery. Very little came as a surprise, it was more like I was just waiting for the characters to tell me what I had already guessed. I found myself annoyed by the pages upon pages of narrative from secondary characters. What I found most troublesome is that these characters seemed to be filling in details that they wouldn't have known about. Not a bad read, but nothing I would tell anyone they HAD to pick up. ...more

A beautiful book. Loved the characters. Definitely a 4+ -- maybe even a 5, but I found it a bit ramble-y (not a word) in parts. It was probably Hurricane Sandy that did it - my daughter lives in Brooklyn, and I sometimes found it hard to concentrate.
