An earthy and beautifully written book about a black women in 1930s northern Florida who seeks a life that matches the brightness of her soul. Her story is told in black vernacular dialogue of the time alternating with stunningly beautiful prose passages. A lovely book - my only regret is that I waited so long to read it.

What a powerful story! This was a great audiobook to listen to, as well. The narrator was excellent! I may upgrade to 5 stars.
