This is the first book I've read by Jack London since I was a boy. This may simply be a story for adolescent boys, but I've retained enough of that experience to enjoy the book. Jack London skillfully takes us to a place that none of us have ever visited and that none of us ever can. He takes us to the harsh cold of a Yukon winter at the time of the Alaskan golf rush. This was going to get two stars, until the ending. I love the ending.

An inverse of "Call of the Wild" - a return to domesticity rather than an escape from. Much more appealing to me - probably 'cause I don't want to imagine any of my pets ever having to make it out on their own!
