I'm not usually a fan of the magical realism genre, but the description of the book sounded intriguing. It took a while for me to suspend my disbelief and just go along with the storyline and connect with the characters. The title character, Ava Lavender, didn't appear until about 1/2 way through the book, but I appreciated getting to know the back story of her family.
