Thirteen 562 pp ★★★★★
I loved every minute of this book. The only disappointment is that it's a standalone. I want to see more of Carl! (played by Idris Elba in my head).

Code Name Verity 441 pp. ★★★★★ BR
(Would it have killed her too add 10 more pages?!?) This book was excellent. I cried more than once. I should rate it in tears.

Influx 406 pp. ★★★★★
Wow. An excellent technothriller with a scary premise.

The Purge of Babylon: A Novel of Survival 494 pp. ★★★ (3.5 stars, actually)
I read this book in fits and starts, but about halfway through I started to really enjoy it. It's not your typical zombie book.

The Cold Dish354 pp. ★★★★ BR
This is a good mystery, with lots of twists and turns. I look forward to the next one.

The Quantum Thief 336pp ★★★★
A far-distant future thriller set on another world. It was very sciency!

message 18: by Cynthia (new)

Cynthia (cynthiab) Finally got these finished and I'm ready to start some new ones. Side note - 6/11 books posted today having jumping timelines. As does the new book I've just started. I had hoped to post 12 books, because I hate odd numbers, but life got in the way. (nothing extraordinary, just cooking & cleaning, AKA Things that interrupt my true mission in life - to read all the books!).

The Gunslinger (The Dark Tower, #1) by Stephen King Wolf (Jack Caffery, #7) by Mo Hayder Daughter of Smoke & Bone (Daughter of Smoke & Bone, #1) by Laini Taylor Wool Omnibus (Silo, #1) by Hugh Howey Going Dark (Silo 49, #1) by Ann Christy

The Gunslinger 336 pp ★★★★★, BR
This is a reread for me, and the beginning of one of my favorite series. I read the original version the first time, and this time I read both books. A little extra time, but it's not a long book and I was so curious to experience the differences. I found that I prefer the revision. (so does King, so I'm in good company).

Wolf 410 pp. ★★★★★
This is the 7th book in Hayder's Jack Caffery series. I love this guy! The way Hayder works the central mystery into Caffery's own story, which isn't nearly as poignant if you haven't read all the books, still amazes me. This is the best one yet.

Daughter of Smoke & Bone 424 pp ★★★★, BR
The first of the series, this fantasy story is billed as YA but doesn't read like one. I wondered if it was written with a mid-twenties college student protagonist and changed to HS to meet the growing popularity of the YA market. Not that authors would do that...Anyway, it's a good little romantic fantasy if you're into that kind of thing. No graphic sex.

Wool Omnibus 509 pp. ★★★★
A re-read in preparation for the Shift Buddy Read at the end of the month. Although after reading the omnibus, I wonder if I read the entire thing or just some episodes. It's a much better book than I remember.

Going Dark 110 pp. ★★★★
This is a spin-off of the Silo books, set in the same world but by a different author. A nice novella. I read it because I enjoyed her work in a short story compilation earlier this year.

The Winter People 317 pp ★★★★
Excellent book. Although this book had timelines with timelines, they were clearly dated and I was never confused.

Station Eleven 304 pp, ★★★★★
One of my favorites of the year. It follows a loosely connected group of people after a flu pandemic has killed 99% of the world. The focus is not on the mechanics of survival, but the emotional aspect of it.

Cynthia (cynthiab) The Blackhouse (Lewis Trilogy, #1) by Peter May Tempting Danger (World of the Lupi, #1) by Eileen Wilks The Miniaturist by Jessie Burton

The Blackhouse 386 pp, ★★★★
I need to set up a new folder labeled 'multiple timelines' or 'flashbacks'. This is another one, because I'm some kind of magnet for them, but it's a very good book. I look forward to reading the 2nd in the series, The Lewis Man, in a BR later this month.

Tempting Danger 324 pp, ★★★ - 3.5 stars if you're a paranormal romance lover.
Surprisingly little graphic sex in this urban fantasy mystery, in which the petite policeman falls for the big sexy werewolf prince.
BR in progress for book 2...must read today!

The Miniaturist 416 pp, ★★★★
This story starts out a bit slow for me, but quickly gains momentum, and nothing is at its seems. I'm still not sure exactly what happened, and i kinda like that.
Supposed to be for a BR, but my buddy has been quiet. Holding out hope!

Cynthia (cynthiab) The 6th Extinction (Sigma Force, #10) by James Rollins Death Without Company (Walt Longmire, #2) by Craig Johnson

The 6th Extinction 448 pp, ★★
I had to make myself finish this book. I've enjoyed the previous 9 Sigma Force novels, but this one is ruined by the numerous personal relationships between the members of Sigma Force. Real life secret government agents tasked with saving the world from supervillains don't get to work with their husbands and wives. There's a reason for that, too.

Death Without Company 271 pp,★★★, Buddy Read
I didn't enjoy this installment as much as the first. My main issue was the lack of identifiers during dialogue. It made it difficult at times to tell who was speaking. Still a good mystery, though.

The Lies of Locke Lamora 752 pp, ★★★★★, Buddy Read + DQs (Day One)
I loved this book. I stuttered a bit at the beginning, but Chapter One's construction did not lend itself well to audiobook. The rest of the book was fabulous, and I did some reading and some listening. I can't wait to read the next one!

Fevre Dream 368 pp,★★
This book barely eked out 2 stars. I started reading it out of curiosity..GRRM does vampires? It reads like something out of the 19th century. It just wasn't my cup of tea. Can't recommend.
