I am moving this up to 5 stars. This is a fantastic book. So many good things. The book turns the corner for the series and becomes interesting, dynamic and introduces a story arc. Really cool, really cool characters are introduced -- Mavra, Leea, Thomas, Charity, Michael, the spirit communicator (forgot his name), and the Carpenter clan. And existing characters are profoundly changed. At the end of this book, Harry is permanentntly altered -- both in his talent and power and ...more

Wow! I love Harry.
This was an excellent way to spend a snowy winter’s day, cuddled up in front of the fire with every light on in my house because I was so scared and creeped out by parts of this book. Think of every scary monster you know and pretty much they are in this book. There are ghosts, demons, different kinds of vampires, fae, and even a dragon.

*stands on soapbox* Book was fine, but heaven help me, Susan and Murphy drive me absolutely bonkers. I cannot stand them! I get so sick of hearing "chauvinist pig" this and "I can take care of myself" that. Why the effing hell do they never listen to Dresden? Yeah, I hate taking orders as much as the next girl but if it is something important, like, I don't know, a life-or-death situation, then I would follow those damn orders and get the heck out of the way so the people who actually know what

Is always the third book. The first one is world setting, the second one is enjoying the life in the world set, a bit freak of the week, and then the third one hits and all bets are off.
This book is darker, grittier than the first two and with a sad and worrisome ending. That doesn't make it any less a good book, it's just not uplifting because Harry wins you over, with his rotten luck and his annoying stubbornness to do the right thing, you just want him to win.
