Love the PC Peter Grant, apprentice wizard, books.

This one, the 5th in the series, was a send Peter to the countryside away from his London comforts book. At least Beverley Brook turns up as backup sent by Nightingale.

Lesley "appears" as a series of text messages and ends with a warning that everything is going to end in a year's time. Not good.

Out in the countryside we have Unicorns and Fae & Changelings and a dude that has too many children with too many mothers.

I loved the first 4. This one, meh.

Not sure why, but it wasn't as funny, it isn't stand alone, you better read the previous, and it just seemed less good. It dragged in parts, the ending was what? Not much.

And nothing to quote at all. Usually there are some lines that must be shared. Not in here, that I found.

Peter goes to the Countryside, subtitle, gets mixed up in what? Not really clear why he has to go - supposedly because 2 kids disappeared, but lots of kids must disappear in the UK, and thi

Quick-look at the Book
So, Leslie is gone. Peter's stepping into a new relationship with Beverley. A small town is riddled with disappearing children, and Peter goes to find out why. As usual, he finds out more than he can handle and has to be rescued by a woman.

Thoughts on this Series
A blend of police procedural with magic, wit, and humor. I love Peter because he's slowly and realistically getting better at what he does and yet he doesn't think it makes him the shit. He's appropriately fanboyin

This was a great addition to the books. The series is really hitting its stride and I am very invested now. Not that I wasn't invested before...

This story seemed especially interesting. Peter is on his own more than usual, but we do see Beverly Brook become prominent in his life - finally.

NOTE from 10/14/25. I recently finished reading The Great God Pan by Arthur Machen and am pretty sure Aaronovitch included the Roman Road and the Foxgloves in this book as a tribute/homage to Machen.

3.5 because Kobna Holdbrook-Smith is an amazing narrator! Besides that saving grace this story was a slow slog and difficult to fully enjoy. After the bombshell of an ending in book #4, I was hoping for more information on Lesley May and her whereabouts. I wanted Peter to get angry and let it all out but he was his usual reserved (except for one moment) self. I also want MORE magic!
