This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers. To view it, click here. I wondered a couple of times if I was reading books out of sequence, but I know I wasn't, as this one picks up directly from the previous.

Ethan is encouraged to leave the area when he hears the Mayor wants him arrested for the murder of the GP member he beheaded in self defence. Reluctantly he does, Merit goes with him into the shelter of the shifters - who have gathered for their annual festival. Unfortunately the festival doesn't go according to plan - it's attacked by harpys. Several shifters I wondered a couple of times if I was reading books out of sequence, but I know I wasn't, as this one picks up directly from the previous.

Reluctantly he does, Merit goes with him into the shelter of the shifters - who have gathered for their annual festival. Unfortunately the festival doesn't go according to plan - it's attacked by harpys. Several shifters are killed and one goes missing. Problem is, the harpys aren't real, they were created using magic.

Someone is kidnapping supes (elves, harpys, incubus etc). I'm sorry, but as soon as Merit took a walk in the Carnival I knew where the story was going. What I didn't expect was for this mystery to involve Seth Tate - reformed character, who found that he had a daughter/niece (we'll go with niece as it was his twin brother that occupied the same body at the time who actually fathered her), who wanted a family so badly she kidnapped to create one. So he put himself in prison to look after her.

Ethan gets more and more frustrated at being away from Chicago - especially as the Mayor takes out her frustration on the leaders of the other houses - so much so, that he eventually returns to the city and gives himself up to the police (and a beating by the domestic terrorism squad), that was tough to read. Their reunion after his release was sweet.

Merit finally reveals Gabriel's prophecy to Ethan (about the green eyed child in her future) and she also reveals that Lakshimi has called in the favour she owes her, wanting Merit to convince Ethan to challenge to be head of the GP (you knew he'd do it as soon as the proposition was made).

Although Ethan professes his love for Merit many times during the book the thought of Ethan taking over the GP frightens her - because she believes it will take him away from her. But she also believes that it is the best thing for all vampires.

I knew however, that Ethan would want to move the GP if he was successful.

Not quite as good as the previous books, but let's see what happens next. ...more

I used to love this series, it was always one of they books that I stalked the postman for and devoured as soon as I had it in my hands. The last few books, whoever, just haven't gave me that same thrill. I still pre-order them but I have had this one since release day and this is me just getting to it. I did enjoy this one, I loved how the pack played a big part in the story. The additions of new characters and supes gave it a fresh feel. I'm still not sure on Mallory but I liked Ethan. Yet again this plot does not interest me, and the continuation of the series seems superlative!

This seemed like it put the storyline back on track for me. Again Ethan and Merit are great together as they work to make their relationship work and it is working. Loved that Catcher and Mallory seem back on track finally. Jeff has someone, enjoyed the whole interaction with Gabriel and the shifters. Daimen seems yummy. I can't wait for the next installment to see what happens with Ethan and the GP. ...more
