Yesterday was one of those moments where I finished a book and went "...Damn, I wish I'd known while reading this that it would make it onto that really short list of books I wish I could read again for the first time." I probably would have savoured it more.

I've read this book twice before, as far as I recall. The first time was probably eighth grade? The second time was probably high school? I don't remember exactly when. I was surprised at how much of the story was completely familiar to me. I was even more surprised I read it when I was young and wasn't completely disgusted by the sex talk ("his pulsing organ"). Oh yeah, and that one section of the book where she was continually raped for like a year.

The third person omniscient narrative voice was too omniscient, frequently using concepts of the modern world to describe the prehistoric. I can tolerate a little of this, but there was just too much. Even characters with little verbal language were thinking modern thoughts.

Human cultures are constantly evolving, so it bothered me when she described the clan's culture is frozen in time. When she said their traditions have become genetic traits, she totally lost me.
