I was shocked and dismayed by how lightly the author treats the polygamy and child abuse of the sister-wives. The protagonist, Rhine, is bought by an older man to serve as his 'wife' (one of four) for the express purpose of bearing him children before she dies or is killed by her father-in-law. Rhine spends her time in the mansion swimming, lounging on the couch, eating June Beans (candy), and flirting with the servant boy Gabriel.

In this dystopian future, an unknown virus kills all girls at age 20 and boys at 25. Therefore, teenage girls are often kidnapped and sold into polygamous marriages for the purpose of providing wealthy families with as many children as possible before their expiration date. Definite shades of Handmaid's Tale. The idea is good, the execution was not. She spends too much time wishing she could escape and you never hear about her twin.
