so this is the handmaid's tale for kids. with some new details for the modern set. premise: world is basically over. only north america survives, but barely - like one step better than the road. due to genetic manipulation and subsequent oopses, there are considerably lower life expectancies: girls live to be twenty, boys to twenty-five. then - coughing, blood, expiration.

so, to keep the population going, and to provide new babies to experiment with, many young girls are kidnapped and sold into

I will admit: I was reluctant to read this. Great cover, lots of good buzz, but there are a couple of dystopian books out this year where impregnating teenage girls is the future's imperative. Which, frankly, is a little creepy.

So I was not prepared for the excellence of this book.

Not only is the story gripping, but it's also creepy-- in a GOOD way. This book has shades of horror, as well as creating a future world that is rotting from the inside out and produces an amazing sense of claustrophia

A semi-mash-up of dystopian books like The Children of Man and The Handmaid's Tale as well as The Hunger Games and Matched with a hint of "Big Love", Wither takes place in a proximate future when we've cured cancer (among other things) but it's cost us our longevity. Men die at 25, women at 20, but that's newer generations. First generations, however, have normal lifelines, provide they aren't killed by other means.

Rhine's parents, scientists, were killed in an accident so now she and her twin b

Very reminiscent of The Handmaid's Tale, this YA dystopian novel is the story of Rhine, a 16 year old girl living in a world where you are born knowing exactly when you are going to die. Due to an unknown cause, girls only live to the age of 20 and boys until 25. "Gatherers" scour the and, kidnapping and killing young girls, forcing them into breeding arrangements. Unfortunately for Rhine, she is captured in such a way, but her captivity is in a gilded cage as she is forced into a polygamous mar ...more

I really enjoyed the first half and was really annoyed by the second half. Wither had such potential, but instead of making the most of that potential, Lauren DeStefano ended up with a book with bland characters and no plot to speak of. It's the first book in a series in the worst sense of the word, in that everything that happened led up to the last few pages, and nothing was resolved but instead left for the next book to pick up on.

DeStefano's writing appealed to me, so I enjoyed the book whil

The moment I saw Wither’s beautiful cover and read its intriguing summary, I knew I had to get my hands on this book, so I was thrilled when an ARC arrived at my doorstep in December from Shelf Awareness.

Even though I barely put down Wither as I was reading it, I wouldn’t exactly say that the plot of this novel is fast-paced. However, between the world-building and DeStefano’s writing, every page is filled with intrigue and emotion. Wither is not only one of the best dystopian books out there, b

Ever since I've heard of this book I've been waiting to pick it up. With stories of girls being forced into polygamous marriages, a dystopian society where all girls die at age 20, and it's beautiful cover, I just knew it was something I would love. Which is why I was so excited when Jesse surprised me with it at our blogger meet up.

Now to be honest, I have read a number of reviews who weren't a big fan of it, and just didn't seemed to get the book. So going into it I prepared myself for the wor

Parts were good but the middle dragged for me and the end seemed anti-climactic.

Full review:

In four years Rhine Ellery will be dead. She is sixteen years old.

Thanks to failed genetic modifications the human race is dying off. Men have until 25; women succumb to the virus at 20. There is no cure. There is little hope.

Rhine was content to spend her remaining time at their house with her twin brother. It isn't much of a life, but it is Rhine's. Until it is taken from her.

Kidnapped and sold as a br

Interesting twist on YA dystopian lit. A virus causes everybody to die when they hit age 20 (guys can live to 25). An evil scientist is trying to find a cure by capturing girls and marrying them to his son so he can have grandchildren....or are they fodder for his experiments? Lots of threads left dangling for the next two books in this trilogy.

I thought I would LOVE this book, but really it's just a good read. Not great, a bit better than OK.

I'm kind of surprised there's a sequel (Fever) because it didn't really leave me wanting a lot more. I felt like it was a perfectly good ending for a standalone novel, but it seems all YA must be a trilogy these days. I definitely see Margaret Atwood's influence...it's very much The Handmaid's Tale kind of story, but it's still missing something.

This had a really creepy, Handmaid's Tale-esque vibe and I can see why it's getting lots of buzz on the dystopia readalikes lists. I had to majorly suspend my disbelief, because as much as I love books where everyone dies at a certain age it doesn't really make sense genetically and I kept thinking "but if they've mapped the genome this well, why can't they find out what's killing these people?" Once I got past that, I was able to enjoy it more. I will be interested to see where the rest of the ...more
