What Members Thought

Sarah
5 stars for the superb audio performance, 2 stars for the actual story.
The story is told as a transcript of a rock documentary from many perspectives, not only band members but friends, producers, journalists, and families. Each voice is narrated by a different actor and the performance of it really drew me in and kept me listening. The actors gave real feeling to their characters, all the blood, sweat and tears of it. They were sarcastic, funny, wistful and both apologetic and unapologetic.

Apparently Taylor Jenkins Reid can do no wrong in my eyes. I totally loved this book! I was worried in the beginning because of the interview style format, but it didn't take long for me to settle in and really enjoy the way the book flowed. The character development was amazing and the story was so engaging. The overlaying perspectives really added such a cool depth to the story, and really emphasized the idea of seeing things from different points of view. The ending gutted me a little and I e ...more

Spring 2020;

I heard about this book a lot toward the end of last year as people's list were coming out and it stayed on my radar to look about for sales etc, and happily enough it did pop up. I started reading this one over Christmas break and then finished it in chunks during lunch duty at work.

I really loved that the format of this book (told in the style of interview transcriptions) ended up being as flawless as it did, because I had concerns at the beginning, but I got entirely swept away

This one was recommended to me specifically for the audio version of the whole cast narrating the story. That was a captivating listening experience at least, but the overall story didn't keep me as riveted as I expected. The hype over this book was huge, and I have to remember to stop thinking I'm going to enjoy a book because of it. Got bored listening to the music production process and some of the same nonsense Daisy and the band members get up to at some point in the middle. Points for capt ...more

This is a documentary about one of the most amazing rock bands of the 70's. It's written in interview style about how they came to be, the relationships they they had with each other and with others, how the music was written, love, angst, drugs...you name it, it was discussed in the interviews by every person involved with the band. The only thing is, this band never existed.

I listened to the audio version, which I suspect is the best way because of the format. It was performed by a full cast

I thought the story was ok, but the audiobook had a full cast for each character and it was fantastic.

A slow burn of a story. Hard for me to get into at the beginning. Intensely wrought characters.
