Wow. Just wow. I loved this book so much, on audio it is magnificent with a full set of performances that catch every emotion and nuance. I cannot stress enough just how much I advise that you experience the audio version of the book. I probably would have still liked it quite a lot if I'd read it on paper, but hearing the performances bumped the experience up into the territory of one of my favorite reads of this year. I was crying at the end, not just because there was emotion inspired by the Wow. Just wow. I loved this book so much, on audio it is magnificent with a full set of performances that catch every emotion and nuance. I was crying at the end, not just because there was emotion inspired by the story itself, but I was sad that I was going to have to say goodbye to these people.

In reading other reviews, I see that there are very few that are middle of the road. Either you love it or hate it - a "Marmite read," in other words. I landed so hard in the first group and, without spoilers, I'll tell you why:

I have always loved watching Behind the Music and other, similar behind the scenes programs about what things were "really like" for the bands and performers. Even before I read the notes that Fleetwood Mac was an inspiration for this story, I spotted it a mile away (and appreciated it). I thought "oooh, I can see where THIS is going!" and I settled in.

There was so much here that is relevant to my life experiences. I'm not a talented artist of any kind, but I am a survivor of long, complicated relationships and have had to learn compromise, forgiveness, grace, and empathy. I've felt deep guilt and shame, and been furious with co-workers and romantic partners. I've had relationships end, with love and very much without it.

That's all here. Loving people who can't love you in the way that you need to receive it. Loving people who don't always deserve that love. Feeling unappreciated for your own unique gifts. Being expected to walk away from your dreams.

One of the many things that I loved, and that Reid got so, so right with the relationships was the familiar situation of getting the wrong end of the stick as to why someone was acting strangely or was angry with you. Because the book is conducted as separate, though concurrent, interviews, the characters are giving their own memories with no knowledge of how the memories of other characters may differ. It's a great take on Rashomon, very deftly handled.

There is one specific incident in the book that surprised me in a very pleasant way, but it's difficult to talk about without spoiling it. A familiar and very frustrating trope was abandoned for something more realistic, and I appreciated it *deeply.* I appreciated everything about the story deeply. The audiobook knocks this out of the park. By having the book read by a host of narrators, the rockumentary style comes through perfectly. I actually had to go look up whether this was fiction because it was so believable. This is an ode to 1970s rock bands--the music, the times, the journalism about them. The characters felt like real people with complicated, sometimes infuriating, thoughts and actions.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, which was written as an oral history - the woven together responses of a series of interviews that bring a 70s rock and roll ethos come alive. My favorite parts were when the author artfully demonstrates how different people can relate the same facts in completely different ways, bringing different and equal truths to bear on history.
